I really don't see how Ultraman can be any more campy than Kamen Rider (especially many recent entries) or Super Sentai. I'd agree with the comparison to Star Trek though. Their stories can be similarly slower with more talking than the faster paced action one might expect from a hero show. I'm not the biggest Ultraman fan myself but I've still enjoyed most of what I've seen.

I might suggest however trying Ultraman Nexus and the movie which is the precursor to it, Utraman The Next. Typically people who can't get into the traditional Ultraman shows do go for Nexus.

I also second the recommendation for Ultra Galaxy Legend Mega Monster Battle and Ultraman Zero The Revenge of Belial. Both are very good movies.
