After writing my thoughts on Zero-One in Kamen Rider Die's thread, I thought 'why not do the same for Donbrothers?' so here I am now, and what an episode to start on. This episode is insane, it starts off normal as usual, but then we get a rather early scene of our Hitotsuki of the week, this was most likely so that the main story of this episode could be told without too many cutaways.
I knew that this would be an Inuzuka focused episode, but I didn't expect how little we'd see of the rest of the cast (aside from Jirou), though it makes sense with how estranged Inu is from the rest of the team, which makes me wonder if we're actually going to go half the season without the rest of the team knowing his true identity, though if what I've heard of Inoue (haven't gotten to any of his other shows yet), I'm not too hopeful.
Anyways, the concept for this episode is quite strange, Inubrother being trapped in his transformed state? That wasn't something I ever predicted happening, but here we are, another thing I noticed immediately, we got so many shots of the Inubrother puppet suit, I know that this is mainly to cut down on the cost of CGI, but I still appreciate getting to see so much of it. Speaking of things that were nice to see again, Momotaro has his introduction sorta thing again, it feels like it's been a while since we've seen that, so it was a pleasant sight to see once again.
We then see Jirou talking to his past friends, though with how they treat him, that might not be the right descriptor, he tells them about how he can transform into Don Dragoku, even using the promotional picture of Don Dragoku, but his (kind of) friends don't believe him, though I don't know if that's because they don't believe people can transform and get superpowers, or if they know of the Dragonfires and don't believe he's one of them, either way they doubt him on that. But, Jirou decides to show his crush/girlfriend/whatever that he can transform, and I won't lie, I've always loved in toku when the heroes don't care about keeping their identity secret, it's just something about it that I really like.
We cut back to Inubrother, who sees Natsumi and tries to talk to her, only for him to end up barking instead of talking, Natsumi decides to hug Inubrother though, but I'm not sure why, I guess she thinks he's a normal dog, but you'd think it would be pretty easy to tell the difference. The two are then interrupted by Jukenki, our Hitotsuki, after fighting him off, Inu detects the way Natsumi ran by following her scent, something that makes sense technically, but just sounds asinine even considering the rest of the stuff in this episode and the show.
Inu starts getting affected by the curse even more and decides to seek out the rest of the team (not that he knows they're also part of the Donbrothers), but he just barely misses getting to see them, he then runs into Kenji, the guy possessed by the Juuto, which keeps up the streak of bad luck that Inu's had on this day, Natsumi also possessed by the Juuto fights off Kenji, and it honestly looks really cool. We then learn that after falling and hitting his head (or maybe it was the curse? I don't know), Inu has lost his memory and then finally succumbs to the curse and turns into an actual dog, and we're only 2/3rds the way through the episode and we already have so much chaos happening it's crazy.
We then see the rest of the team engaging Jukenki, including an avatar change to Dairanger, but then Jirou shows up to help, but suddenly his dark side, aka Don Torabolt leaves Jirou's body and they both transform, but rather than fight, Torabolt actually sort of teams up with Dragoku to beat the Hitotsuki, they then transform into their Robotaro forms, which look really cool in all honesty, though a shame that they're CGI but they still look great. The Hitotsuki then decides to (I don't know what the word for this is) grow big, causing both Torabolt and Dragoku to combine into their mecha, I really like the combining, with Dragoku caging Torabolt in, also we're in a new arena than the usual one.
And then, we have one of the coolest mecha fights I've ever seen in a toku, I couldn't do justice to describing it, just please watch it for yourself, we see the conclusion to Inu's story, I don't really get what happens since I don't have any translation for it, but he turns back to a human, so I guess that's resolved, though we don't know if his memory is back to normal. This was an amazing episode, my favorite so far in Donbrothers, and that's a big compliment, this is what I'd consider a 10/10 episode, but that's just my opinion of course.
