Dino Fury
Pre-Show Preamble
"Confused" was the word I used to describe the general feeling of
Beast Morphers
.
"Conflicted" is the word that I'd use to describe the overall feeling I get during an average episode of
Dino Fury
.
It's so weird to me, because this is the first full on Hasbro production in the franchise, and yet it still feels as though there's two conflicting parties on how the show should be handled.
On the one hand you have a side that's trying its best to embrace the inherently campy and silly nature of the franchise with funny dialogue and situations that feed off of character humor, whereas on the other side there seems to be those who want to try and cover up those aspects with leaves and feathers or are otherwise doing some of the more outlandish things out of obligation. Scenarios such as body swaps being just sort of glossed over whereas such a plot in any other season would be seen as an easy way to have some fun with its cast.
Don't get me wrong, there's nothing inherently wrong with wanting the show to be more story and/or character focused, but in my eyes it's more often than not done in such a messy way that the writing really isn't up to snuff and almost makes it seem like the show is ashamed of it itself, if that makes any sense.
Add onto that how this show has a really weird trend of making characters apologize for things that really aren't their fault and it made it really hard for me to pick a favorite episode; With the end result being that I like alot of certain key aspects but never once looking at an episode and going "Oh yeah, this one 100% works for me."
Thus my choice of episode ends up being moreso one that stuck out more in my memory compared to others, rather than feeling that it reached any sort of great heights, and I could easily see me changing my mind on what I consider my favorite episode later on down the line. But for now, the episode I've decided to do my highlight on is...
Episode 8: Unexpected Guest
Kelson Henderson is always awesome.
While the Rangers are distracted defeating another Sporix Beast, Void Knight utilizes a new monster known as Wolfgang, whose howl has the ability to dismantle every Ranger weapon, including the Zords.
Meanwhile, Mick from
Ninja Steel
makes his way to Earth, tracking the Ninja Nexus Prism. He attempts to enlist the help of the Dino Fury team, but Zayto(for some reason) is skeptical and blows Mick off, citing they have their own problems to deal with. Zayto apparently speaks for the team as a whole, because no one really objects to his decision.
Taking the investigation into his own hands, Mick causes antics around BuzzBlast, and as it turns out, Void Knight wants the Prism too.
Ignoring the fact that I'm one of the few people who legit loves
Ninja Steel
and that this serves as the crossover episode of the season, this bit of the episode really highlights why I chose this episode as my favorite: Its one of the few episodes that isn't afraid to have fun with itself, with alot of the humor and fun coming from Mick's' antics and dialogue with the other characters across the episode. That's the power of Kelson, I guess.
He also, somehow, has a physical copy of the Legendary Ranger Database, but don't worry about that.
Mick decides to stick with Solon to try and find a way to counter Wolfgang's' howl, while the Rangers work to find the Nexus Prism. Mick and Solon's' interactions are really on point and never failed to put a smile on my face. Not so much when it comes to the Rangers interactions with the Prism.
Zayto reads the Prism's' mind to discover that the Morphin' Masters are not only a thing, but that they're responsible for the forging of many a Ranger power source across the years. And really, the entire sequence comes across as something more to serve towards the older audience rather than any new viewers or even the Ranger team in-universe. Because at no point does anyone really ask "What the heck is a Morphin' Master?" Everyone just sorta rolls with it, and in hindsight, it sets an unfortunate precedent for episodes to come.
Anyway, this leads into the fight scene of the episode, with the day only being saved thanks to Mick, who, with Solon's' help, made a candy that alters Wolfgang's' voice so the Sporix Beast can't howl anymore once Wolfgang has eaten it. And all this while funny banter from the villains never once lets up. Needless to say, Wolfgang and Boomtower(yeah he's here too) grow giant to even the odds.
...Where'd his tooth go?
The giant monster battle in and of itself is pretty solid, and features a surprisingly brutal finish to Wolfgang via impalement. Mucus makes off with Boomtowers' Sporix, but the Rangers manage to secure Wolfgang's' as well as the safety of the Ninja Nexus Prism, which proceeds to fly off into the unknown reaches of space. All in all the day has been saved.
Void Knight isn't too happy though. Bemoaning how the energy of the Sporix isn't powering his mysterious machine fast enough. But it's also here where the plot gets a very big revelation.
This entire time, Void Knight's' goal has been to use the Sporix energy to revive his love, who is in critical condition. Which makes alot of sense, as throughout the show Void Knight has never once attacked any innocents directly and has primarily been focused on the sole mission of finding the remaining Sporix, ontop of alot of the conflict of the show being focused entirely on the Rangers directly due to them continuing to get in his way. This twist turned Void Knight, a character who I was already digging, into one of my favorites of the season.
In the end though, focus goes to the Rangers, with a funny bit of them eating the prototype candies that Mick and Solon made. And to Zayto's' credit, he does apologize to Mick for Mick's' poor treatment at the start of the episode. All's well that ends well as Mick catches a Space Taxi, determined to still track down the Prism however he can.
Overall, there's a handful of reasons why I chose this as my personal favorite. It fully embraces the fun aspect of the franchise, the one who actually did wrong is the one to apologize and learn a lesson at the end, and there's a great jump forward in the overall story and Void Knight's' character arc. It's just a good time all around, and I'm hard pressed to think of another episode that accomplishes all of that in either of the seasons. Good stuff.
After-Show Bonus
Now that I am for all intents and purposes caught up with
Power Rangers
, I have a special project planned. Stay tuned.
