I feel like
Shirakura's bit on the blog this week
, where he mentions how both Inoue and Morota apparently felt like they could've put more of a spin on this one than they did, despite Shirakura himself claiming he cried
twice
, kinda sums up this episode perfectly. Because, you know, I kinda think all three of them have a point?
Donbrothers is a show that always seems to focus on doing things in an unorthodox fashion, and yet, everything about this episode is as straightforward as can be. The only norm Donbrothers is rebelling against here is the one it created for itself.
That being said, maybe this
isn't
that unusual? Ever since episode 15, something about Donbrothers I've become consciously aware of is that, for how wacky and strange it's always being, a lot of its core storytelling actually sticks a lot more to the fundamentals than you might realize. Sure, if you focus on the current jumble of overarching plot threads or the way the merchandise-driven stuff is worked in, it doesn't look that way at all, but in terms of
stories
-- how characters with emotions and desires grow and change from the beginning to the end of each narrative -- I might go so far as to suggest that Donbrothers can be downright
traditional.
At the very least, this episode in particular is certainly as traditional as this series has ever gotten. It doesn't surprise me to hear that Inoue apparently wondered if he should've gone a little crazier with it. But the thing is, I've also come to realize that those strong fundamentals are maybe what I love about Donbrothers
more
than how weird and different it is (and I do love the weirdness!), so it surprises me even less to hear that Shirakura was exceptionally pleased with how this one turned out. And, well, as for my personal opinion:
I mean, come on, it's a toku thing about Ghosts directed by Satoshi Morota. How I am not gonna love that?
Honestly, the only -- the
singular
-- negative thought I had about this one was that I really wish they made more than one version of Don Onitaijin's combination stock footage. I've already been thinking for a while that they're struggling with the ad-lib spots in a way Zenkaiger never did, but for a story like this, a designated "serious" version where nobody's mouth moves really would've helped the mood. The sound editing there got a bit awkward, for sure.
But like, outside of that? It's a wonderfully human little standalone tale that delivers on wacky comedy and bittersweet melancholy alike. Basically everything that makes Donbrothers great. That's maybe something worth emphasizing here. Especially with bits like Dons Murasame and Dragoku's contractually obligated fight scene that serves no narrative purpose, this is the kind of standalone "filler" type episode that would ordinarily have the air of some random guest writer taking a stab at a show, but here, this is still 100% the same guy who's written every episode of the series. Despite the self-criticism, it's like,
you can really feel this is a story Inoue wanted to tell.
Flip that earlier statement around, and Jirou's role is only as awkward as it is because Inoue wrote a random story about a ghost instead, you know,
something that actually required the latest toys to be there.
It's uh... it's okay if I just let the episode mostly speak for itself here, right? I'm trying to think of how to actually dig into it, between how funny it is, and how sad, and how sweet, but it's just... it almost feels somewhat
crass
trying to unpack it too much? Like, for example, I really love the detail that Minako has such a strong mental image of this guy she's never actually seen, and how that both makes for funny jokes while also genuinely saying something touching about her feelings for Shinzou, but for some reason, it's like, I'd kinda rather just let everyone ponder this episode on their own. Suffice it to say, it's a really well-realized installment of a consistently great series, and since it *is* such a standalone story, I can even see this being a go-to recommendation in the future if anyone ever asks for a single episode that makes for a good sample of what Donbrothers is all about. (You may think this would be misleading since this episode is so "normal", but honestly, I'm pretty sure it mostly just looks that way to people who are already used to how this show rolls.)
