I'd agree with that.
I can't really think of any good ones. Mainly because either everyone (including myself) theorized that it was true/going to happen or magazine scans 'spoiled' it, so it kind of loses the 'surprise' that it was intending. The only other 'good one' I can remember is Wolzard being the Magiranger's father...

In Dairanger, most of the important Gorma are just clay dolls and are not aware of their condition, there was someone or something else behind the curtain.
In Shinkenger, the head of the clan was not ShinkenRed but a girl, he was a decoy. Too bad she appeared too late from nowhere, but the idea of a female Red could be fresh and awesome for the super sentai formula. In Liveman, Dr Bias intended to use the brains of his evil geniuses from the start, to be young again. There was an aborted plot with a timeloop/time travel that could have been about Bias indefinitely get old and get young again, this would have been awesome but the last episode discarded that part. On a much more personnal level, in Bioman Prince was a replacement for Dr Man's real son. At the time I watched this I was 7~8 old, and it really freaked me out when it was revealed he was not his son but an android, and he didn't know himself; and later the real son appeared in the show.

That Dairanger twist was totally insane, but I thought the better Dairanger twist was that Master Kaku is a former Gorma officer, and abandoned the Dairangers so he could return to the Gorma, try to become the next Gorma emperor, and end the conflict peacefully. Crazy that the Daimugen thing isn't even one of the two craziest twists in the show, heh.
Boukenger doesn't have enough of an overarching plot to set up any mindblows, but it was pretty neat when Natsuki ended up being an ancient Lemurian princess.

In Megaranger when Dr.Hinelar found about the rangers and tried to run their social lives and try and destroy their dreams and confidence that's an angle we don't see very often and Sentai and shows why Mega has one of the best end games ever; We see the rangers to the point of being belittled for their efforts and having their lives being ruined due to this, and it ties in so well to the series and the maturing of the main characters and the theme of trying to find your place in the world.
Another one I really do love is in Jetman is when we find out that Maria is Ryu's thought to be dead fiance Rie . Really the twist isn't too large; The impact on Ryu itself is the most insane part; We see him going from the strong, straight laced leader to losing his mind and having a mental breakdown; We see an emotional change that we don't see everyday from such a strong-willed person and really hits the hard fact that even if they fight villains and have powers, rangers are most importantly people. One that I loved when I first saw it was Takeru not being the real head of the Shiba Clan and the real one was a girl and we had our first female red. I saw Shinkenger when I was still pretty young and I had always wanted a female red the same way I wanted a female green/even a male pink; And seeing that they had finally done it was awesome; I had Charlie in SPD but that was just for a little bit and she wasn't a main ranger, and it really shook up Shinkenger and the final arc; I'm a little fuzzy on it but I remember my reactions. I also really liked the Burai being already dead for obvious reasons, The family aspect of Asuka, Jannu and Lije in Abaranger and how Lije was actually Asuka's and Mahoro's daughter this whole time. That's all I can think of what I've seen so far but hope to add more as I go on.

I agree. The stuff with Rie, while not exactly shocking was brilliant. I was honestly shocked that I was watching a "kids" show. Jetman hit some pretty emotionally heavy moments, and a lot of it was thanks to the Rie story. |
