This week we get the fallout from last week's epic and disastrous fight. Rian is captured in the heart of the ruins, Ryuga is blind and jailed by SG-1, and Takeru and Aguri are still free, but Takeru is missing a hand and Aguri is kinda tired.

We pick up a little bit after the last episode ended as our remaining free heroes converge at their hideout. Burai has rescued the little girl, who is apparently a Makai Priest, too (I have my theories on who exactly she is based on the preview for next week). He also planted Zaruba on Ryuga before fleeing, which leads to a lot of actual banter between the two (very pleasantly nostalgic for fans of the first two shows).

Much of the episode is focused on Ryuga escaping from prison and deciding whether or not to give up - with a lot of flashbacks to his childhood to add some context. This culminates in a blind dash for his sword and a really, really cool moment.

There wasn't a ton of action in this one and no new armor scenes, but it's a really strong look at Ryuga as a character. I think this is very much the turning point of Ryuga's journey as a hero and I'm very eager to see what heights he'll rise to from here.

Next week it looks like we're getting some more backstory on exactly what happened to Ryuga's mother and who Sonshi is? Is it possible they're one and the same?

Am I the only one terrified that Sonshi is going to turn out to be an older Kouga who was turned into a mado horror? I mention this cause it's garo...and that means twisted.

I paused the video when it showed Sonshi holding his sword. It's a similar blade, but it has a different hilt than the Garo sword.

Nay, I think it's more likely either Sonshi or Burai will have the "I am your father, Ryuga" twist, if anything.

I think this series is trying to keep itself far detached from what came before. Zaruba (and the title of Garo) is present to ensure fans the continuity is still there, but otherwise the show is doing it's own thing.

Agreed, and I'm quite okay with this for now.

Although if they were to do a second season with this cast, it'd be interesting to see the continuity tied a little more by exploring the connections. Just like the first Garo series introduced the characters and the basic lore, and then Makai Senki delved into and expanded it more.

Finally watched the episode since I was waiting for O-T's HD version. Man, I hadn't realised how much I missed the Zaruba banter.

One little thing that bugged me though. I acknowledge the Garo armour must give a degree of protection, but if you have a sword plunged into your face I'm fairly sure your eyes wouldn't stay physically intact

Yeah, that kinda bugged me, too. Especially since the last episode ended with them closed and bleeding. They really should have gone for some "eyes gouged out" make up.
