RIP Sonny Chiba

Shinichi "Sonny" Chiba has passed away on August 19th, 2021 5:26PM JST. The cause was due to pnuemonia worsened by COVID-19. He was 82. He is survived by Juri Manase, Mackenyu, and Gordon Maeda. Manase's notable role is Crazy 88 in Kill Bill vol.1, Mackenyu as Eiji Tomari in Kamen Rider Drive and Okuyasu Nijimura in the JJBA live-action movie, and Maeda will be Warsman in the upcoming drama Kinnikuman THE LOST LEGEND. Chiba is no stranger to toku as well having played Space Sheriff Voicer, the father of Gavan in Space Sheriff Gavan as well as Golgo 13 in the live action Golgo 13 movie, Golgo 13: Assignment Kowloon. And of course Chiba is famous in Hollywood as Hanzo in Kill Bill vol. 1.

Chiba was one of the original toku heroes too. He was in what most people would know as Invasion of the Neptune Man, and had a starring role in the original Golden Bat movie. And of course he was the second Seven Color Mask, and guest starred in a couple episodes of Robot Detective.

One of my favorite Japanse actors. I grew up with his movies and seeing this news really hurts me.
