I think you might be right, I must be thinking of the last World game. All I remember is Guilamon walking around with a sword.. for some reason.

It was not a very good game.

I think a 2D fighter would work rather than a party brawler, but it would eschew Rookies and Champions and basically feature just Ultimates and Megas for the battlers, which is something that's apparently taboo.

I have Rumble Arena 2 for the Xbox. Its pretty fun even if the gameplay mechanics are just watered-down Smash Bros style.

Just finished Xros Wars chapter 18. It's about time they got to Ballistamon's, Sparrowmon's, and Dorulumon's evolutions! Now it feels like a proper Digimon series. :P
