Do yourself a favor and just watch the compilation movies. The original Gundam isn't bad but there's a lot of nonsensical filler you gotta sit through.

Easy example I can make…there's one episode where they search for salt. At the end, the chef acts like it's the end of life as he knows it.

You mean on dvd or streaming? Assuming you want subbed torrents are the easiest.
