Well, the Ultimate Guide didn't turn out to be much. It was worth watching it to hear the dulcet tones of Paul McGann as he discussed the series though. The book-ending clips weren't bad, either.

After all the lurking in this thread, and listening to 8 be a Shepard for Auton's, I decided to watch my favourite Doctor from the very beginning.

Three's first adventure is fun, but slow. I know four parts is relatively short as a lot of Three's adventures were in seven parts, but because the Doctor has lost his memory, has been anchored to Earth and is dealing with an annoying bit of regeneration, it takes about three episodes for the serial to get going, then it only has a single episode left. Although man, the final part of this serial is so GOOD. Plus, it isn't really a great serial for Three in general anyway. These episodes bring all sorts of lasting mythos for the Doctor into the fray and explore Regeneration more so than ever before, but that is for The Doctor plural, Three himself does surprisingly little throughout these four episodes. His signature lines are nowhere to be found and there are no kung fu poses. Sure we learn he is a snappy dresser, and is very classy indeed, but then he spends the majority of the rest of the episodes either pretending to do science, chew the scenery or dribble over Caroline John (RIP). If I wanted to sell you on why he is my favourite, this isn't the serial I'd pick, that is for sure. Hell in the end, Liz is really the one who defeats the Nestene, not the Doctor. It's a shame she'll soon just be dropped from the show without a word, she could have been a classic companion. The Auton's are also brilliant, although the budget constraints are obvious throughout the whole thing, the Auton's themselves really haven't aged all that badly. They're meant to be plastic mannequins and that is exactly what they are. They also wrap a good story out of why they are plastic, beyond 'lol it was cheaper that way'. Plus the scene where we get to see the true power of their wrist guns is actually pretty fucking terrifying even now. And as their plan falls into place, they manage to make it feel suitably grand scale, in a very budget constrained way. Just finished the Skull of Sobek, eight adventures season twos worst episode. Man the Headhunters return to the series was so fucking good!
