So I rewatched "Lucario and the Mystery of Mew" and I don't think I can give a review of it (or rather, Lucario) without coming across as an angry jackass.

I feel ya bro. It's terrible that the Pokémon anime is....the way it is and yet Pokémon Origins is so boss.

On Lucario: I liked being Mewtwo more in Smash Bros. Sure he was low tier but damnit he was fun.

Maybe it's that I just don't like some elements of the design, maybe it's that his VA sounds perpetually pissed off, maybe it's because I don't like many of the super popular Pokemon (Gen6 is the first time I've ever used Charizard and I deliberately picked Chespin because everyone and their inexplicably hot, young, Professor-dating mom picked either Fennekin or Froakie), maybe it's that when I first saw Lucario in action he came across as the unique flavor of "angsty" that well-to-do middle school anime fans* love, but I don't like Lucario and I doubt I ever will.

Though to his credit, the jackel has Eagle Vision...

*Note: by "fans" I'm referring to the kid that just discovered anime (and Japan as a whole) and throws around Japanese words while they watch Linkin Park AMVs in between episodes of Naruto on Toonami's final run. You know, the period when Tom was orange and blue and had a Thomas the Tank Engine face.

I feel like Origins was just as disappointing, actually. I went in expecting something, but it was just "The game: The Anime."
It didn't feel like it did anything, and a major part of adapting a game to another medium is "Addition."
Origins added nothing beyond the 5 minutes of backstory for Giovanni/Sakaki. While superior than the current anime, Origins stumbled over it's own set of failings.

To be fair...I haven't seen that movie in a while, so I was misremembering it.

But yeah, they did overplay him. I still like his design a lot, and the mythos behind him is pretty cool. (Not in the movie, I mean the whole aura sensing thing, and them being fiercely loyal to their trainers, which actually a lot of Pokedex entries mention that.)

Some furbait are more popular than others, though. Notably any fox/vulpine Pokemon (Eevee included), Lucario, humanoid Pokemon that aren't fighting type, and the like.
