Austin St John, Walter Jones, and Thuy Trang wanted more money to be on the show - the show's popularity had exploded and they were not union at the time so they were working 20 hour days 5 days a week with little to no leeway in time off, etc. They then walked off the show in protest and rather than give in to their demands, production brought in Steve Cardenas, Karen Ashley, and Johnny Yong Bosh.
Jason David Frank has revealed that any time the cast did want more money, they'd use him to negotiate - he had enough power being "THE Power Ranger" of the show that they'd give in to his demands. The rumor/contraversy around David Yost (Billy) and his departure in the middle of the Zeo season was that he wanted more money, akin to what Jason David Frank was making, but the producers said no ... they were hoping to get him off the show anyways (they tried to write him off twice to no avail) and he apparently wanted a larger role in the upcoming Turbo movie that was beginning production. David Yost claims he left the show after years of abuse and harassment from production because he is gay. A former production member of the show had since called him out on that claim saying he left because he was greedy and egotistical but the masses more or less ignored that statement and all sided with David Yost. Not saying I think he made it up but after claims from former cast members that he was always kind of a brat BEFORE he came out and made his accusation, I do think it was a combination of him acting like a brat as well as some mistreatment of his sexual orientation that caused him to walk off the set. During Turbo the cast was replaced - they found out about it through a newspaper ad while they were in make-up one day. Some were okay with it as they thought it was time to move on, others were not so happy with it, but kudos to them for sticking through it to have a ... semi proper send-off.

Yea. What Kickback said. xD
Honestly, about David Yost, I side with him. I've heard both sides and it's hard knowing what the heck happened. |

Also regarding the original three departures, I once had a chance to chat very informally with a member of the production staff and he said that the three of them had an agent who pushed them to demand more and walk telling them the show would fold and do whatever....which obviously didn't happen. apparently the producers chalked it up to thier youth and there were no hard feelings in the long run. It's always a tough call, I'd say Steve Cardenas, Karen Ashley and Johnny Yong Bosch were all inferior (too strong?) to the three who left and never really were any where near as memorable...BUT after leaving to show Johnny took additional lessons and became an astounding actor so it's tough to call if it was a good thing or a bad thing when they left.

To be fair, I think a lot of that inferiority (I don't agree with you, but I can see where you're coming from) could be chalked up to the fact they were pretty much constantly in the shadow of JDF, while the other 3 had plenty of time to shine when he wasn't around.

It is hard to know what really happened, but have you ever seen that Video they shot on set for some classroom, it was clearly EARLY season 2 when it was made and at one point you see Thuy Trang have to put her hand on David yost arm to calm him while he stares daggers at JDF.....on a film that is supposed to be for kids, if he couldn't keep his cool for 5 minutes for some kids .... like 2 years before he left over the "abuse" I have a hard time believing some of his side.

I know right! The same producer I talked to said the very first time he worked with Johnny in an Anime setting he cringed when he saw his name on the cast list thinking "Oh man...this is a really nice guy but he can't act!" and then said Johnny recorded about a minute of dialogue before all those old impressions of his talent went straight out the window, guy said he was like a totally diffrent actor.

And I would (respectfully) disagree, Just speaking for myself only, I think the Shadow of "cool" JDF had was pretty worn out by the time he airboarded out that airplane. The three were hired in a hurry, From what I was told Steve Cardenas was....lets use the word unproffessional, behind the scenes, Johnny was very shy so didn't WANT a lot of attention in the role....and I wasn't told anything about Karen Ashley, and I met her once and she was very nice, but they didn't do anything with her character until S3, and then she left....
