The ending is garbage though. It is just another reset button ending that has been done a million times before. Plus it didn't make any sense other than, "OH, we have done this before, but Roger died, so he wasn't able to stop Angel from fully resetting the world" crap. It would have been so much better had it turned out that they were indeed a world on TV.

Anyway, I always saw the series as more like Batman meets Dark City rather than Gundam.

Not quite accurate a third season was always planned but lack of interest by Bandai and CN killed it hence the ending we got.

If I'm not mistaken, Big O is one of those animes that did better in the West then it did in Japan much like what happen with Voltron, Sonic X and Dragon Ball GT?

Quite new? Evangelion ended well before Big O. As did Wolf's Rain and RahXephon.

I don't see why they would plan a third season when CN had to go out of their way to even get the rest of the series made. Hell, I don't even understand why it only had 13 episodes to begin with because it came out well before Japan started to break up their series like they do now (and god do I hate what they do now, just make the whole ****ing show and be done with it in one go!!).

also, paying to air a series dubbed is probably a lot less expensive than paying to have the series MADE.
