I enjoyed seeing everybody's increasingly crazy attempts to get "one good strike" on Tarou to make him acknowledge them. Even Sonoi challenged him just for fun, now that he's on they're on good terms. It's always nice to see those two guys interact.
After constantly failing to get the "one good strike", Saruhara and the others exploit Tarou's gullibility with a lie about finding his lost childhood pet kabuto beetle, Gii-chan. Maybe they actually learned from Sonoi's regret here, since they abort at the critical moment, coming to the shared conclusion that a victory in that way would only prove Tarou right that they all suck. Kitou even points out that they were manipulating his feelings for a short-lived animal who would have naturally died after a few months, so he'd definitely be dead after about 10 years. It's a surprisingly good moral that frames Tarou as being in the right while the others let their desire get the better of them. So Jirou isn't the only one with a dark side to watch out for, which means the others have to accept him as a part of the team. Don Murasame makes his debut here and the first thing he does after being awakened is go back to sleep for most of the episode. When he does wake up, again, his fighting style is pretty cool with how he can dive in to the ground like a shark and reappear unexpectedly, like a ninja. He gives the Donbrothers a hard time for sure. However, his character isn't anything like I expected at all. He doesn't talk a lot, but he's basically a momma's boy and even his voice sounds kind of young. I've seen some people joking that his true identity might be Kitou's ex-bf, which I found amusing. It seems to be more a case of Kamen Rider Saikou though, where the Ninjark Sword is his true form and Don Murasame is merely an extension. I don't get the feeling like he's an Inoue-type character so far, but maybe that'll get filled in later. It doesn't leave the same first impression that Stacaesar left, but I've learned not to judge by first impressions alone.

Tarou has a habit of smiling in this very particular manner, where he raises just the one side of his mouth in a way that makes his joy look like something the people around him should be scared by, and that's... well, I suppose it's just one of the seemingly limitless number of reasons the characterization in Donbrothers is so consistently exceptional. This episode is just great. You've got it starting off with the promise of a cool new supervillain(?) for the heroes to fight, and then that entire notion just gets completely ignored right up until the last five minutes of the episode so we can focus on some unrelated nonsense instead. And that's just this show knowing how to play to its strengths! Don Murasame can be as cool as possible, and it still won't matter, because no amount of action is going to leave as much of an impression as Haruka's melodramatic determination to get one over on Tarou set to cartoonishly exaggerated storm clouds. Or Shinichi's paintball assassination attempt on Tarou. Or Tsuyoshi's comically optimistic expectations of how Tarou will react when he tries to steal his food. Or heck, we've got Sonoi to talk about here again, too! Him and Tarou are just straight up frenemies at this point, aren't they? There was a thought that occurred to me this time, listening to Sonoi's dialogue about how both the Nouto and Tarou value humanity. While the relationship between Tarou and Sonoi in particular recalls Inoue's work on Faiz, I've only just realized how much the overall dynamic of the Nouto resembles the antagonists in Kamen Rider Agito, and Shirakura's whole thing from that era of shows he produced that made a point to question what justice is. I'm sure there's some very interesting thematic stuff that could be pulled out of further analyzing that connection, especially depending on how Donbrothers plays out from here, but like, right now? It's so hard to do anything besides just sit there grinning at how much fun it is watching these two rivals compete in a way that only proves how strangely harmonious their relationship is for alleged mortal enemies. Like pretty much everything else here, it's both a delightful series of wacky events, and also totally informed by all the odd yet entirely human emotions that drive this cast. And as always, that's what really makes it all land so well -- how grounded that insanity is in the consistency of the protagonists. That scene with Haruka is maybe my favorite in the episode. (To nobody's surprise, I'm sure.) It's exemplifying everything I loved about the episode all at once. For one thing, I felt Satoshi Morota's direction was exceptional, and that completely absurd thunderstorm is the perfect thing to point to while explaining why. The visuals throughout have a habit of getting exaggerated in the same way the writing always is, which makes them a perfect fit, keeping the mood super clear even as the story swings wildly from heightened emotion to heightened emotion. And again, nowhere is that more apparent than in the sudden shift to the heavenly glow of Haruka imagining her plan to pretend to be an angel instead of a demon, followed by the neutral reality of the situation, where's she kinda both. It's a sequence that's only around two minutes long, and it packs so, so many different things in there. And this is far from the only sequence in this episode that plays out like its own beautiful little short film. By the time Don Murasame actually does factor back into the plot, it's like I'm so satisfied by the resolution, with Tarou showing his vulnerable side in a big way and everyone refusing to take advantage of that, that it's hard to imagine there's room left for this new character to make an impression. And I guess if I'm being totally honest with myself, this one didn't make me any more curious what Don Murasame's deal is? I'm interested in where that plot thread is going and everything, but not any more than I was after the cliffhanger last week. It was mostly just neat to see Don Momotaro Alter again. (I'm still holding out hope for Don Zenkai-Oh's return!) So I guess if this episode needs a flaw, that's maybe it, but if you're on the same wavelength I am with Donbrothers, that probably won't sound like much of one.

Don Murasame is voiced by Ayumu Murase of Haikyu and Devilman fame.

This episode was a delight, as Donbrothers always is. Let's get into it:
-We can talk about Sonoi's and Taro's growing relationship all day (such good moments from them this episode!), but Sononi's and Tsubasa's relationship is interesting for one. (Preferably, I hope their relationship doesn't take a turn for the romantic. Sononi observing Tsubasa's tumtulous love life like a person watching "Funniest Dog Fails Compliation" and providing the occasional comment about it is my ideal honestly?) -To be honest, I wasn't really interested in Don Murasame when we started getting rumors of a ninja/shark rival. But as *soon* as they opened their mouth, I was immediately more interested? This idea of this "scary" new rival being essentially just a kid doing whatever "Mother" tells them to do, it's such a strange twist. Hoping they turn out to be a really fun member of the cast, -Haruka's scheme was the best one by far, change my mind. Kohaku Shida is such a delight to watch in any of Donbrothers' comedic moments, and this one was an absolute blast. Last edited by cosmicrescend0; 07-03-2022 at 11:15 PM.. |

Is anyone else getting a Urashima Taro vibe from Don Murasame? Like when he turns into his Alter form, he's underwater with a Japanese palace in the background.

oh my god, Fashion Leader?! That line completely knocked me out. And it was also perfect transition into that goofy version of the Nouto's theme music. I can't possibly describe what Tarou and Sonoi have going on, but it's amazing to watch.
The contest to land a hit was fun too and it tickles me so much that Jin of all people takes an interest in it and decides to help. I was so into it that I completely forgot there hadn't been any actual toku action yet. I was half-expecting Tarou to at some point declare Don Murasame the winner of the contest, and everyone else getting upset about it. |

Nah, the sea turtle should be there then. But even if it doesn't have relations to it the underwater dragon palace or Ryugu in the case of Japan has always been a staple in Asian folklore so I don't think it's out of place.

I think the highlights here involve Momoi, he got to have a... Broader sense of emotion, for lack of a better word, he seems genuinely happy about Haruka's 'gift', shows a degree of sadness we usually only see in his flashbacks and I very much enjoyed seeing how both contests happened, especially with Sonoi seeming to truly want to make amends for his foul play.
Oh and I think we as a fandom have failed if we don't clamour for a Don Grandma seeing how the episode ended
