Those who contract with the ring are destined to fight and determine who is Number One.

Love the OP credits and song!
Looks like Gozyu Leon has already defeated Bun Red offscreen, either in the premiere or earlier. The next time preview suggests that Gozyu Tyranno has defeated Oh Red as well. So I guess we won't be seeing all of the No.1 Universe Rangers. It'll be intriguing to see how the distribution of Rings changes as the Gozyugers compete in the No.1 Battles. Since this is an anniversary season like Zenkaiger, I'll be sure to keep track of the Ring usage so that I can keep everybody updated with fun Ring Statistics! For comparison, here's the Final Gear Statistics. This treasure hunt battle had a personal outcome for Fire Candle, whose best friend Cassios Beia was destroyed by Tega Sword Yellow. While Hoeru claims nobody would care about him if he disappeared, Fire Candle has actual healthy relationships with his allies, which is a reversal of the usual contrast between heroes and villains. Fire Candle is clearly a proud man with a good heart, like Heart from Drive. The bio claims he'll have a rivalry with Hoeru, but so far, he has more reason to hate Ryugi. Another contrast to Hoeru is his fellow Gozyugers, Rikuo and Ryugi. They're also outcasts, but they seem a lot more aware of their No.1 Ambitions, an idol and an acolyte respectively. Appropriately, they also have their own weapons/mecha, which makes me think that Gozyu Wolf will unlock his own Wolf Decalibur 50 when he learns more about his No.1 Ambition. Hoeru is basically the underdog, or rather, underwolf, as he manages to win the first round in a single move by stealing the treasure from his opponents, which is fair play in the spirit of treasure hunting. Hopefully Saori will go easy on the rent now that he's saved her life. Rikuo is absolutely Zukyumpire here, using his Zukyun to manipulate a pair of his elderly fans in to letting him borrow (he's a hero, after all) their treasure. The way he talks is full of charisma, which is a credit to the actor as well. Ryugi is also a pianist! Didn't know that from the bio. If he has a Tega Sword church, then I guess he'd be the one playing the organ. He makes good use of the super strength granted by his personal Ring and as a devout follower of Tega Sword, he'd surely be mad if he knew how Hoeru was slobbing in the cockpit. I guess those two aren't going to get along easily.

Two episodes in, I'm about ready to write this season off entirely. It's everything I disliked about Donbrothers without any of the things I liked about Donbrothers. Our red hero is unlikeable and played by a bad actor. This episode's two new Gozyugers are also insufferable and blue flat-out swindles an elderly couple *and this is never problematized.* Nobody's personality makes sense. The plot... is what, exactly? The henshin dance is ridiculous in a bad way. The only thing the episode did that was at all interesting to me was naming a Bell mook and implying that he was, in fact, a decent guy. Before our not-at-all-heroic heroes kill him. Directly implying that the Gozyugers may be the villains of this show.
(Working the ring theme into the mooks - because you "ring" a bell, yeah? - was cute, though.) I like the suits *and* their helmets, so this a step up from BoonBoomger in that regard. TegaSword is at least cooler-looking than our last primary mecha. The villain design is great. There's a lot of shaking-up of Sentai tropes, but so far, those creative risks haven't paid off. I figure I should meet the last two Gozyugers before giving up, but I'm disappointed that two episodes in, I'm strongly inclined to skip the entire season. |
