I am finally all caught up on the last two episodes of Ultraman Omega (which I really put off for far too long) as well as just finished watching tonight's episode of the series. Now, I am honestly anxious about how the whole show is going to end next week.

As of last night, I have knocked out episodes 13-15 on my Ultraman Z rewatch via Disc 2 (now with three episodes away from finishing it) of my copy of the series on Blu-Ray both in Japanese and in English. Man, I love this show and everything about it so much.

And at last, Ultraman Omega comes to a close. I was actually pretty caught off guard by Sorato giving his life to Kosei like that, even though it's such an Ultraman trope and is even foreshadowed by the lyrics to the ED theme. Nice little finale to the show.
Overall I think Omega was alright. In terms of New Generation shows I think I like it a bit less than Geed and a bit more than X. Early on I was quite fond of it, and obviously I thought the finale was pretty good too, but the show just felt like it lacked focus. It probably would have been more compelling to me if the show has really honed in on the whole "bonds between humans, aliens, and kaiju" angle and to be blunt cut out some of the superfluous characters and storylines. I really don't think the KSTC added to the show in the end, and there were some other episodes like the Alien Barossa one that just felt at odds with the show's very setting. Ayu and Sayuki also tended to spend a lot of time on the sidelines. It certainly had some good points though, I think the Meteokaiju are actually my favorite combat gimmick in an Ultra show (even if I find it frustrating that we never got an explanation for their origin or why Kosei had to use them for so long) and I think the show trying to center the story on Sorato and Kosei's dude-ish friendship was a smart idea even if the show drifted away from focusing on their dynamic later on. I'd like to see more Ultra shows that have an emotional core like that. I also got to experience watching an Ultra show as it aired for the first time with Omega, and while it didn't really blow me away it was interesting how different the experience felt from binging a show in the series that had already aired and has been a nice thing to look forward to in Friday evenings for me. Well then, I think I'll see everyone again next show! Last edited by GoldenXtreme; 01-16-2026 at 08:28 PM.. |

How did I not see Kosei becoming Sorato’s host coming? That’s so perfect.
All in all, Omega is a serviceable show IMO, in the best possible way, not all-out amazing all the time but I had fun. Some real cool moments sprinkled throughout and more than anything, I didn’t dislike anything it did. It might be my favorite Ultraman show since Z actually? Just because, well, I didn’t like Trigger and Decker at all, Blazar started off amazing but fizzled out quickly for me and Arc had some real highlights, but the overall show was kind of a nothingburger IMO. |

Since Omega has officially completed its run, it's high time for me to do updated versions of my Ultraman series rankings list both for New Gen and Reiwa eras:
The Complete Ultraman Series Rankings (New Gen Era Edition) 1. Geed 2. Z 3. Orb 4. Omega 5. X 6. Blazar 7. Decker 8. Taiga 9. R/B 10. Arc 11. Ginga S 12. Ginga 13. Trigger The Complete Ultraman Series Rankings (Reiwa Era Edition) 1. Z 2. Omega 3. Blazar 4. Decker 5. Taiga 6. Arc 7. Trigger Honestly took a little bit to figure out where to place Omega and even then, I would sometimes find myself going back and forth between that series and Blazar among the rankings. Hopefully, I would eventually do my Ultraman rankings lists for the Showa and Heisei eras and overall. |

My thoughts on Omega overall is that I feel it's a "greater than the sum of its parts" show for me. Compared to Blazar and Arc, I'd say both of those shows have individual things that are better than Omega. It's when you look at Omega as a whole where I think it really shines in terms of how its characters and themes are explored and developed over time, culminating in one of the strongest endgames in recent Ultra. It can be a bit of a slow burn, as the first half almost feels as if it's mostly meant as setup for the second half, but come that second half, I think the payoff is well worth it.
Honestly though, it's hard for me to even figure out where I would rank Omega next to Arc and Blazar, as I feel all three shows excel at very different things. I think Blazar, Arc and Omega will be very interesting shows to look back on, as while all three of them are very different from each other, they all feel like they share the same creative impulse and drive. |
