While out shopping on MultiEarth I5109, Kiki and Kotobuki encounter Fuware and Emu, a mother and daughter on the run. Just then, the phantom thief Fade, who is pursuing them, appears, and Kotobuki fights fiercely to protect the two.

A good episode. Interestingly, despite the most frivolous vibe, it's on Luminous Earth that the most realistic and controversial crimes occur. For example, here, a mother and daughter who escaped from an abuser also steal his treasure, which also makes them criminals. The episode is also interesting for the introduction of the phantom thief Fade, who I think will appear again. An interesting concept of a noble criminal helping where the law can't. And also, given the emphasis on the rescue operation, I think this episode can be considered an homage to the Rescue Police Series. Overall, I really enjoyed it. Even the chaos and overload of events, in my opinion, only benefit the story.
And the next episode will definitely please those waiting for the overall plot to develop. Reiji will face Dark Gavan, who is spreading Emorgears. And it looks like this time he won't be able to control his anger. |

I'm thinking that perhaps THIS episode is actually the end of the introduction arc of the show. Everyone's gotten a few episodes of focus, the recurring cast have all been shown to the viewers, and Dark Gavan will be debuting next time. Like some other people, I'm hoping to see more overarching elements starting next week.
Kiki and Koto are as fun as before and we even got a rescue scene a la the Rescue Police Trilogy! Fade also seems poised to be another character we will see more of later on. Again, a bit light on substance, but that might change soon. |

Detective heroine duo VS Phantom thief: Gavan Edition. While the action was mostly good, the plot was the most superficial so far. In concept, it's a story about a mother and daughter fleeing from a toxic relationship, which sounds dramatic enough, but in execution, there aren't any clever twists or developments to make it intriguing and it seems like the phantom thief Fade was added as a gimmick to distract from that hollowness.
Other than being a cliche without any uniqueness to his presentation, the ending suggests that Fade doesn't even know what it means to be one. Like, he's a phantom thief for hire, but then he steals from his client? Pretty sure phantom thieves are supposed to have a code of honor, so this is poor conduct, regardless of how much that guy deserves it. This just makes him look like a poser who only cares about the aesthetic. Reiji's involvement is too limited here, for the protagonist. He doesn't say anything important and essentially only shows up to help in the climax. This just feels like an episode of Chou Uchuu Keiji Gavan Luminous, which wouldn't be so bad if there was an actual progression to the overall narrative to make it worth watching, if not on a multiversal level then at least universal. Even for Kiki and Koto, whose interactions continue to be amusing, there's basically nothing to see here that wasn't already established in their debut. Next time we're finally getting a story set in A0073, so I think that'll be the clincher for whether or not I continue to engage with this show.

Interesting, I thought this was by far the best episode, primarily because it treated the mother and daughter as the plot devices they were. This was an episode about the thief, and it was all the better for it.
In general, the show shines most when it makes episodes about the criminals as entertaining criminals without trying to shove something else in there as well. It's not groundbreaking, but it works and is fun, without coming off as underbaked drama.
