I understand. Mom's ranting about random bullshit again so I can't consternate.
I know her job is hard and that the parent don't respect her as much as they should but I just get so sick of dealing with that all the time. Apart from that GG. Gaby, how on earth do you make the Miis so strong? I for the life of me cannot figure out the custom system in Smash 4. |

So is there a reason why everyone hates clone characters? I hate them too, but I honestly have not thought a good reason of why I do so.

Sakurai went on to state that modifying and remodeling 3 existing characters was easier than to create one fully fledged one. As a result, Dr. Mario, Dark Pit, and Lucina (Who was already confirmed to be an alt costume for Marth before being tweaked into her own character) took up the time that could've gone to creating someone entirely different and unique. So the hatred for clone characters comes from two primary sources. The first is as already described, the work that went into them could've gone into someone original. The second is that they're seen as a cheap way to pad out the roster.

Simple. Character design and creation takes work.

But that's exactly why we have clones. They're easy to make. Making Lucina a separate character rather than a skin requires almost no extra work, where as making someone entirely new could take months (look at even Mewtwo or Lucas). Not having them wouldn't leave room for other unique characters, it just means there'd be less characters.
"They're seen as a cheap way to pad out the roster" You also missed the primary point. Their inclusion doesn't take away a spot for someone else, but the the time worked on them could've been devoted to another. Sakurai explained that making a clone character wasn't just "Copy. Paste. Alter color effects" and that it still takes up lots of time to ensure they're not identical to the primary character. By wasting the time on 4 modified characters just to pad out the roster size rather than 1 creative character all their own, you can't see why people get upset?

I don't think clones should be added over more unique characters, but there's no evidence that's ever happened and your quote sounds like a slight exaggeration.
Sure, if you removed every single clone character the developers might then have had time to have included, what? One completely unique character? Maybe? I'm just not sure that's a fair trade off when we're dealing with characters like Lucina and Dark Pit who are incredibly popular with fans (even if they have a fair amount of vocal haters in certain communities) and they probably required little work beyond tweaks that wouldn't exactly require the whole development team. And that's not even mentioning the likes of Falco and Luigi who are series staples at this point. It's really not as cut and dry as you're implying. We haven't see them talk about anyone else ever being considered but cut in favour of hashing out some more clones, so anything you say is speculation. Nintendo are well known for holding back games if they don't feel they're finished, so if they thought someone else should have been in the game, I'm sure they would have delayed it to fit them in. This all just sounds like it's people again getting upset that their favourite character wasn't included. |

To be fair, characters that were once clones have often developed into something more unique with each Smash game. (Main examples being Luigi and Falco). So who's to say the inclusion of these characters in this game is a total waste if they become unique in Smash 5?
