Truth be told, I wouldn't doubt the latter, seems like an ironic twist and possibly a fitting punishment. There is no way he can redeem himself, the road for that is too long. I imagine his penance could be bearing the burden of the fruit itself.

He'll accomplish what he lost sight of, but at the cost of sacrificing himself in some way.
