Well regardless, that's how shows with limited runs (which Crystal had at the time of starting) work. Budget is poured into the beginning, not the end.

Evangelion would probably be the most famous example I guess.

I prefer the artwork of Crystal because I prefer the manga's artwork, but Crystal is a mixed bag because the manga was a mixed bad. The Black Moon Family story is absolute horse crap in the manga, so it is just as bad in Crystal. The four sisters had absolute no development and the first three chapters pointlessly gave a new soldier an upgrade just to have them captured at the end, which was bs. It served no purpose and was more annoying than tragic. I really feel like Naoko had no idea what she wanted to do here and was just scrapping from the bottom of the barrel here just to make it different from the Dark Moon Kingdom arc.

Thankfully, things will get better afterwards, especially when they get to the Dead Moon Circus. However, get read for really creepy gross scenes with Chibi-Usa after this arc is over.

The only thing I do truly like better in the manga/Crystal from the original anime is that Rei is not a bitch.

And here I thought that was only in the dic dub.

Considering that Sailor Moon was never planned to run as long as it did, this is actually pretty understandeable. Being asked to continue, Takeuchi rushed into the following arcs and you sometimes feel that.
Personally though, I never bothered about the Ayakashi sisters too much because not all villains need strong character development imho. They were meant to prove that there's a larger group of rebels from them Black Moon and show the Senshi that they still have to grow a lot more because they are not yet strong enough to take on upcoming threats. And they did just that. Yes, they were plot devices. But personally, I think those are needed too.

I just read the manga a few months ago, so I have a fresh memory on it. Go to the SuperS arc especially.

I was way too young when it was in its heyday, and I only remember seeing the SuperS movie when it was on Toonami, that's it. But I did watch the Japanese series in 2012, and finished it last year, before the new English dub came out. Trust me, the new English dub is 1 gabillion times better than the old dub, both in casting and scripting. Sailor Moon isn't my favorite, and it has its flaws, but I will say this: some parts of its fandom are super nice and kind. I've seen some toxic fans, but there's this forum I joined called The Galaxy Cauldron, and going there has done wonders for me, especially after my bad relationship with the Precure fandom. Anyone who's a Sailor Moon fan, please go there. The people there are warm, welcoming, accepting, and kind, and there's NO drama or SJWs!!!!!
