If I recall correctly Shinkenger has the least CGI in mecha battles from your list of Sentai, relying more in practical effects. However, because the heroes are able to use elemental powers, you can expect much CGI in the human-sized battles. Go-buster, however, does rely heavily on CGI for the mecha battles, as the individual components also get a chance to fight once in a while. And these components are animals and humanoids doing agile stuff that is not easily shown with just practical effects. For example: the yellow ranger has a helicopter that is able to transform into a rabbit that jumps around and kicks all sorts of evil robot arse. And the red ranger has a giant car that is able to change into a CGI cheetah and a humanoid form that is able to do CGI jetpack assisted jumps. But the CGI in this series is not painful to watch and even among the best Super Sentai has done. The series also makes good use of practical effects and all the humanoid robots still have nicely designed suits, that are used for closeups or scenes where the robot stands still. |

That post was on page 3 of this thread, so it's understandable you'd miss it. So no problem.

You could try an episode or 3 to see if the CGI ruins the series for you. Otherwise, you might miss out on what I see is one of the greatest sentai ever.
Why do you dislike CGI so much, if I may ask? Personally I think CGI is an improvement in a Mecha battle. I find mecha battles in Ye Olden Days a bit boring to watch, as they consisted of nothing more than the robot and monster wrestling a bit before the robot initiates his finishing move to end the battle. CGI gives the creators a chance to add variation to the battles, allowing robots to do a multitude of other attacks, instead of the standard stock footage finishing move. |

I've definitely grown to like Sentai itself as opposed to just Power Rangers nostalgia or guys in suits fighting, and I've gotten a bit more used to the CGI, so in time I might dig it. It's not like i'm trying to dislike it. As for right now though, it's still a bit of a turn-off. ![]()

It's particularly hard to recommend any series since around 2001-ish they kind of became extremely CG heavy.

PS I really didn't mean to turn this thread into the "EpsilonX hates CGI" thread.

There are some series sprinkled throughout the past decade and a half that use more practical effects, but they're not the norm, unfortunately.

Well, the whole reason I started watching stuff like this was because I liked seeing the suits in action. I don't really need to see fancy finishing attacks and stuff like that, I just like seeing two guys in suits rumble, even if the suits look cheap and fake. To the point where 90% of the draw for me for Godzilla, Ultraman, Sentai, Rider, etc. is seeing the suits in action. It also doesn't help that the CGI is usually pretty poor.

Your reasoning of liking to see people in suits fight is understandable. However, like other posters before me said, CGI does become the norm. The producers would be mad not to use it, since it is cheaper than practical effects, and has the ability to add some versatility.
I agree that Zyuranger's T-rex doesn't look good. I get what they were going for in wanting to make it look more modern, but in this case the GGI is just lazily and cheaply implemented. Back on topic: I rewatched some of the Go-Buster mecha battles, and the show also has plenty of people in giant robot suits beating each other up. In fact, there is even an entire episode dedicated to it, where the red ranger and his mech are forced to fight lots of evil mecha...in a boxing ring. And said battles are really CGI-lite. |
