The Kingsmen - We got to see an advanced screening of The Kingsmen tonight and the trailers were completely misleading on this movie. This movie was utterly fantastic. It had a ton of great one liners mixed with some pretty damn stylish action scenes. All of the actors were phenomenal in their roles with both Colin Firth and Samuel L Jackson being at their A game here. The story was interesting with some nice nods to old school spy movies along with a ton of comedy that did not feel forced in. There is not too much more I can say about the movie without giving it away other than this is one of the best Not James Bond James Bond movies movies all time. I give it an 8/10 and it more than makes up for the lackluster movies that have plagued theaters these last few weeks.

We did a Robocop double feature with the original and remake as I have seen none of them before.
Original - It was a pretty good movie. I loved the build up to Alex becoming a machine and everything that came after. I liked that they declared him dead and tried to keep him memories erased in order to have a perfect machine. Watching him naturally return to his human thoughts felt natural and was well done. I also liked that the movie was just just one giant action scene after another and they paced themselves. There were quite a few of awesome actors to be found here too. Finally, they did a nice job of making Detroit look run down, dirty, and ridden with crime. Overall, I give the movie a 7/10 stars. Remake - I have to be honest, this was actually not that bad. I liked that they tried to do their own thing with it rather than making it a shot for shot remake. The only problem is that it came off as generic and unoriginal. I have seen this plot done in the past and done better. There was too much action in it and I did not feel anything for Murphy. Also, Detroit was way too clean and did not feel like they were in need of a robot police force. Another negative is I felt like I was watching a movie set in the Metal Gear Solid 4 world because the Ed209s felt too much like the Gekkos rather than ED209s. Finally, the black was just ugly and this is coming from somewhere who wears black all of the time. There was no need for it other than to make it edgy. Still, as I said, I give it a lot of credit for doing its own thing, but I do miss the made up commercials the original had, especially Nuke'Em. Overall, I give it a 6/10. |

The Star Wars Saga (1977 - 2005):
Wow. All it took was a rewatch of the six movies to rekindle my love for Star Wars. While the first two movies (in chronological order (Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones)) weren't that great, the other four movies were just amazing! Personally, my favorite out of the six is 2005's Revenge of the Sith, with 1980's The Empire Strikes Back in second place. The other two, Star Wars and Return of the Jedi, were ok in my opinion. Star Wars (A New Hope) was somewhat predictable, while Return of the Jedi seemed to drag on a lot. Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace - 5/10 Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones - 4/10 Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith - 8/10 Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope - 6/10 Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back - 7.8/10 Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi - 7/10 |

What makes Empire a 7.8? That just seems like an odd score. And really, a 6 for ANH?

The Town That Dreaded Sundown (1976)
This was a very great movie. It was a great little crime drama that was shot very well, had some good fast pacing to it, and was rather suspenseful at times. It has some hokey moments that kinda take you out of it, but overall it's great. I highly recommend it.

Finally found the time to go and watch Birdman. I have to let that one sink in a bit before I can really say alot about it but I absolutely loved it. This movie does so much with so little its incredible. It talks about love, to be loved, identity, what it means to be an actor, how we see the industry, how the industry sees us, how it sees itself and much much more. It was absolutely exciting to see the journey of a broken man trying to figure out his place in this world and what he wants out of life. The acting in this movie was incredible and I cant wait for the Blu-Ray to come out so I can watch it again in english to really see Michael Keatons incredible performance in all of its glory.
Cant recomend this movie enough. |
