Read and finished AVX today. I have to think about it some more before I cans really say what my opinion on it is but overall I liked it.
It had some great ideas on the concept of Destruction vs Rebirth and I liked that for the most part there really wasnt a good side or a bad side. Only two opposing factions with leaders who were desperate and out of options. |

Sooo had some time to think about AVX so here is my "review" of it so far. I´m dividing this into three parts to coincide with the three main acts of AVX.
Act 01: It's Coming (#01-#05) This Arc of Avengers vs X-Men kicks off the big conflict we are presented with in this book. The Pheonix Force is on its way to earth and both the Avengers and X-Men learn of its arrival. Hope Summers connection to the Pheonix becomes stronger and thats what catches the attention of the Avengers so Cap and the Gang arrive on the Mutant Island of Utopia to convince Cyclops and the other X-Men that it would be for the better if the Avengers take Hope into custody. And then all Hell breaks lose as Scott Summers doesnt see it the same way as Cap does. Both of them get into an argument what is best for Hope and how to deal with the coming arrival of the Pheonix and what that would mean for Humans and Mutants alike. Cap using his position of power to put Cyclops under pressure the Mutant leader sees no other choice and attacks Rogers to get him off his Island. This is the big starting point of the event and the war that is now upon the Marvel Universe. At first glance this might seem as a lazy way to get these two factions two fight each other. But its actually a pretty great way to get them into those positions. Both the Avengers and the X-Men are afraid of whats about to come. The Pheonix is one of the most destructive forces in the universe and both factions remember all too well what happened when the Pheonix las visited earth. What makes this so interesting though is that both are afraid of it out of different reasons. The Avengers think the Pheonix is here to eradicate earth and end all of existence as we know it while Scott and the X-Men are afraid of extinction and the Pheonix is maybe the only hope they have at survival. The scene with Captain Amercia and Cyclops on the beach of Utopia showcases this conflict extremely well. Both men are desperate in their actions. They dont know for sure what the Pheonix will do once it gets to earth but both of them have a vague idea of what might happen and thats enough for them. Time is running out and they dont have any options left but to get a hold on Hope Summers since she is the key to understanding the Pheonix Force. I liked that very early on the event didnt pick sides. Neither Cap nor Cyclops were painted as the bad guys who were on the wrong side of this conflict. Both Leaders had valid reasons for thinking the way they did and believing that when the Pheonix would arrive it either brings destruction or the promised rebirth of the mutant race. The rest of the Arc is a war with no good guys or bad guys only two factions who want to get Hope Sumemrs first so when the Pheonix arrives they would be prepared. And when the Pheonix arrived they werent and most of all Hope wasnt prepared so in their futile attempt to kill the Pheonix the Avengers created something much worse as the entity got split into five parts and posessed Cyclops, Emma Frost, Magik, Colossus and Namor to create the all powerful Pheonix Five. Act 02: No More Avengers (#06-#08) Jumping ten days into the future we are now presented with a whole new conflict in this event. The Pheonix Fice pretty much used their new powers to remake the world into a Utopia were noone had to live in poverty or fear of wars anymore. Regining as the new rulers of the world it all looked like Cyclops had won and finally achieved the will of Xavier to create a peaceful society were Humans and Mutants could coexist. But thats not how Captain America and the Avengers saw it. Cap couldnt trust this new world order always feeling like there is something up with the Pheonix Five and that something was too good to be trusted so he and the other Avengers continued their fight against the X-Men wich resulted in them infiltrating the Headquarter of the Pheonix Five trying to get Hope Summers out of there so she could help them fight the Pheonix Five and get the world back to what it was. The whole notion of the fight has now changed at this point in time. Instead of a war with two evenly matched factions we get a guerilla style warfare with the Avengers being easily outmatched by the new Pheonix Five. This is also one of the intresting points of the story since it looks like it shouldnt even be happening anymore. The X-Men created a Utopia and the world seemed to be in a better place now and yet it was just too good to be trusted and most of all it was too easy. Peace isnt something you can just create in a few days by using your godlike powers to remake the world as you see fit and threatening everyone into submission who disagrees with you. In this Arc the look at the conflict shifted as the X-Men more and more took the position of the villains showing signs of the Pheonix messing with their heads and using them for its own goals. With the Avengers still fighting against the X-Men we also see Scott completely lose faith in what he tried to build. In his mind he gave the earth eternal peace and still the humans rebell against him and his race so he sees no other choice but to use his new powers to put the Avengers out of commission. This whole conflict then meets his all time high as Namor the King of Atlantis declares war on the humans and floods the nation of Wakanda with a tidalwave. The Arc ends with the defeat of Namor and his portion of the Pheonix Force getting assimilated by the remaining Pheonix Five. While I think that this is the weakest arc of the story there are still some great aspects to it. The whole idea of desperation is still present with Cap not buying into what Cyclops is trying to sell. He still cant but see this new Utopia as a prison created by the Pheonix Five to keep the Humans in check. The Avengers are convinced that the Pheonix will destroy the earth in the long run and even if it looks like it wont they cant risk it. On the other side we got Scott whose desperation shows in a completely different way. He thought he won. He achieved peace, created a Utopia and Mutants could now live in peace but at the same time was blind to how he achieved it. He forced this Utopia onto the earth and ruled as this godly figure who instilled fear in everyone who didnt agree with them. Its the setting stone for whats to come not just for AVX but the future of the X-Men and Cyclops way beyond this particular story. Act 03: There Can Only Be One (#09-#12) This is it, the big climax of the AVX storyline and I really like it. The story is pretty much that the remaining Pheonix posessed X-Men are trying to systematically eradicate every single member of the Avengers while the Avengers are seking refugee in the city of K'ung Lun trying to find a solution to this whole mess. Everything now builds to the last two issues when the only two Pheonix posessed X-Men that are left are Cyclops and Emma Frost both wanting to defeat the other so they would be the only vessel for the Pheonix Force. And thats exactly what happens during the last fight when Cyclops finally gets the upper hand and takes the Pheonix from Emma and transforms himself into Dark Pheonix and killing his mentor Charles Xavier in the process. The whole ideas of Avx culminate in this last arc and really pays off in a big way. The despearation of Cyclops to secure the future of Mutant kind made him into the one being he feared most. He turned himself from a savior into the destroyer the Avengers always anticipated the Pheonix Force would be. His last exchange with Xavier before he kills him is one of the most powerful I have ever read. Xavier is not angry at Cyclops for wanting to secure peace and all costs but he is disappointed in him for losing patience and taking the easy way out. Scott was Xaviers most gifted student and in the end he learned nothing. He wanted to make the world a better place but he wasnt strong enough to wait for it to happen. He was tired of waiting for it and saw the Pheonix as a golden opportunity but in the end it was his downfall and turned him into a monster. On the other side with have the concept of Destruction vs Rebirth that is the crux of the whole storyline. The Utopia Cyclops created could only happen through the destruction of what had come before. Freedom had to be sacrficed for peace but in the end the Utopia itself had to be destroyed for the rebirth of the mutant race in this now Post-AVX society. Through the Pheonix we got the destruction of the old ways and the rebirth into a new age where X-Men and Avengers would work together so the mistakes of the past would never be repeated. That's looking pretty grim, but in a good way, action's pretty solid too.

He most definately will at some point. The early costume is just there to underline the gritty streetlevel stlye action we are going to get. I wont be surprised if we see him in the classic outfit by the end of the show.

The red costume was confirmed to appear.

So it's more or less the sensible alternative to the yellow costume. ![]() |
