Affection and friendship aren't the same thing. Playing with it in Refresh will raise the former and cause those messages to come up (among other things) but it won't do much of anything for friendship evolution. If it's at that high a level it shouldn't be too long though. Have it hold the soother bell, if you have it, and it'll help a lot.

It's probably too late to say now, but another option would have been to just catch a Pikachu. Pichus have a chance of calling them in SOS battles. It's also tedious, but probably less so than friendship evolution.

Anyway, cleared my second trial so gained the ability to fish. Took about 15 minutes of resetting some rippling water to get the Crosola, and then a bit more for some predatory starfishes to come out, but finally I got a Mareanie. It's so ugly and so cute. I love this thing.

Never going to evolve her so she's gonna be pretty useless but whatever. Mareanie!

Speaking of who, I love its Japanese name. Hidoide. It manages to be both a starfish pun and literally just the exclamation "that's terrible." It's wonderful.

And I got a friend to evolve my Rockruff into an edgewolf. Also love this dog.

And I got my team setup for now. Rowlet, Butterfree, Magnemite, Abra, Ledyba, and ungoos. I'm sure some of them will get replaced (probably Ledyba and Yungoos for sure), but for the moment it's a rather nice team. Been catching a lot more to fill up the PC and Pokedex.

During day 2 I beat the first grand trial. Spent way too long grinding at night because I wanted to evolve Linlin before she gets replaced since she'll be the first to get axed as soon as I can get a Rockruff (and almost caught a Crabrawler from some berries that would have replaced somebody too and actually made this fighting crystal I got useful). So feel pretty overleveled right now. Should probably turn off that exp. share too since even though I don't think it's as broken as XY's, it's still taking some fun out of it.

Also still hate Rotomdex... Because now the darn thing won't ever just shut up.

Got Squishy to activate its Schooling form. Still doesn't help him stand against Salandits, so yeah, he'll probably get replaced with Stufful or a female Salandit. Mikio (Lycanroc) may have cemented his spot on the team. Accelrock is just soooo good in taking out Salandits that call on others lol.

Um from what I've read it's the same as XY's but the leveling mechanics for Sun/Moon are different.
