Edit 2: Possibly controversial opinion ahead! Oddly, I don't have an issue with the Master being a woman this time out, but I still find it a little unsettling with the Doctor. I think because the Doctor very clearly gender-identifies as a male and I don't really see that changing, at least for internal story reasons. The Master, on the other hand, has always been a bit of a wild card and I could see him making the choice to be a woman as a further means to his/her goals. Of course, we have no idea how the character is back so perhaps it wasn't so much a decision as necessitated for other reasons. Still, I think it is a development that makes for more sense for the Master as opposed to the Doctor.

I thought this was a pretty great episode. The whole Missy reveal was guessed 11 weeks ago, but it was still done very well. She pulls off menacing so much better than John Simm ever did, but I guess that's the benefit of not having to play the Master as a clown and/or hungry nutjob with an electric skeleton. She still clearly has a few screws loose, but I'm not sure how much of that is legitimate and how much is just her fucking with the Doctor for the lulz. And even if she does really think she's the Doctor's girlfriend, it's not like it would be the first time the modern series got weird about their relationship. Seriously, go back and rewatch the series three finale and tell me you don't see subtext there.
As for the gender thing, you can complain all you want, but it was canonized in The Doctor's Wife. And given the state the Master was in the last time we saw him - not to mention his established history of unconventional regenerations - it wouldn't surprise me if something weird like this happened even without the Corsair thing. I liked the Cybermen reveal, too. It was clearly foreshadowed with all the endoskeleton talk and the eye pattern on the doors, but you could still miss it if you weren't watching closely. Or, you know, if you'd missed all the trailers with Cybermen footage in them. Sigh. ![]() One more episode to go, but I think it's safe to officially call this as my second favorite season of the modern series, just a smidge behind 5 and a skosh above 4. |

Dammit, I missed this one and I don't know what the name of the episode is so I can watch it again. May I get some assistance.

Was on my edge throughout the whole episode. Not perfect, but it was definitely the most entertaining episode so far.

I ♥ Doctor Who!
I’ve been thoroughly enjoying this series and am sad that there’s only one episode left to go, but also excited! My favourite episodes are Into the Dalek, Listen, Kill the Moon, Mummy on the Orient Express, Flatline and Dark Water.

Me and a friend was guessing all through the season who missy was and my god we were right from episode one. It was a great episode. Every thing was handled well and the way missy said who she was great. Also I hope this is a test to see how we like the change of the master so we could see a female doctor and I would. To mind it at all.

I think the biggest issue for me is that it seems the days of a suave, more calculating Master are truly gone, and every series writer now is going to play him/her/it as a deranged maniac who makes Anthony Ainley's pantomime antics seem subtle. How I wish the rumours of Charles Dance being the Master had been true.
Oh well, I always have Big Finish

This episode was the absolute best of this season. I did not see Danny getting struck by the car right off the episode. I thought he was going to be the reason Clara left the series. And I even guessed, once, that Missy was the Master and I still never saw that coming. What really took me by surprise were the Cybermen! And the clues were all there and it still took me. How he said the Dark Water showed only organic material, how they wore exosuits so the bodies wouldn't rot.
After seeing this episode though I tell you this. I am not donating my body to science or being cremated. Fuck that shit o_o And I Love The Mistress. Deliciously evil. I miss the beating of drums, but she more than makes up for that little character trait. And Zeo, to your point about each Master being different, he's supossed to be. He's a Timelord. And like how The Doctor changes personalities dramatically with each incarnation, why can't the Master change when he regenerates? |
