Because I don't get enough of this at work...
The proper past tense for being killed by hanging is hanged, not hung. In every other case, hung is the appropriate past tense. It irrationally annoys me when people get that wrong. And for the love of god, to misplace something is to lose it. Loose is the opposite of tight. |

I approve of this thread. It might help with my English essays. If you need suggestions, could you cover apostrophes?

Rogue is a sneaky person, or, if you prefer, an X-Woman. Rouge is a type of make up.
It's is a contraction of "It Is". Its is a possessive.

Addendum to Lesson 1.
Anyways- Anyways is the incorrect form of anyway. The prefix of "any-" is used for singular roots. Ways is plural. Therefore, anyways is incorrect. |

This is one of those colloquial wrong things that may not ever be completely fixed. Such as using "like" as a placeholder word instead of "uh" or "um"

I know. However, some people may use this thread as assistance for their English assignments, so it's best to cover as many concepts of English grammar as possible.

Good point. Punctuation can be sometimes hard to grasp. Specifically the semi colon. People avoid using it a lot since not many know the proper uses for it.
And I myself will still get some things confused if I think to hard about it. Who and Whom for example.

My biggest pet peeve misspelling along these lines is the word 'voila'. No, not the instrument, that's a 'viola'. 'Voila' is pronounced, and misspelled constantly as 'wah la'.
The worst malapropism I've ever seen was when someone wrote 'for all intensive purposes' instead of 'for all intents and purposes.' |

Absolutely nothing in the English language bothers me more than the perversion of "OCD" into an adjective. For beginners, it's a noun, seeing as its root is "disorder". Unless you're trying to describe yourself as a literal personification of the disorder, you've messed up your grammar. On top of that, please do not use that term on a self-diagnosis. You do not have obsessive compulsive disorder if you want to have your socks organized, you're simply particular about having your socks organized.
A lot of people don't seem to know the difference between hyphens and dashes either. - is to denote a compound word, — is used for a break or interjection. Hyphen: Singapore is a city-state. Dash: Watch where you poke tha— Stop it! Last edited by Brainchild; 04-12-2013 at 12:49 AM.. |
