This is baby steps from the way I see it. I have often thought of a world were we don't need to go through TV-Nihon, or Overtime, or Grownups In Spandex, because Toei (or anybody) starts releasing toku to us in a timely fashion, in Japanese, with subtitles for our language of choice. This could be just the first tiny step to that ultimate goal. We are practically there with anime because of services like Crunchyroll, Hulu, and even Netflix. But we did not get there overnight. Those of us who have the ability to support this, should.

Baby steps is putting it hilariously lightly. Huge cost, specific package, no subtitles, US only, old toku shows. Even if this does succeed, which isn't looking the most likely of things right now, it may never reach beyond the United States and even if it does, I'm assuming I won't be watching Kamen Rider whatever subbed, in my living room, until I'm like fifty years old.

So unless Overtime and the gang decide to pack in because this took off, I'm thinking it's still a long long LONG time before fansubs are a thing of the past. If ever.

I'd happily pay $20 a month if it was a decent, HD (where possible) streaming net service, even if it didn't have subtitles at first. Cable TV is such a rip-off though that I can't see myself going back to it, even for Toei stuff.

FYI, the channel is NOT just the Toei Channel from Japan streamed on the internet. It's a completely different channel.

What is up with this fandom and its unwillingness to support the shows they love? first the fandom completely blows off shout factory when it comes to getting the last of beetleborgs released because its on streaming and now Toei, a company that loves to hold it stuff hostage and not release it for viewing, like beast wars neo and beast wars II, is making a channel. hell toei refused to give shout factory zone yet allowed them to release the rest of japanese g1

I don't know what you people even expected this channel to be, THIS IS A HUGE RISK, a risk I NEVER believed toei would do, and here we have a shot, TO SUPPORT THE SHOWS WE LOVE, and the fandom scoffs at it saying its overpriced.

you get two tv channels, sure you might not want to watch the other one, but you got to figure that into the price. this is pretty much just like neon alley, which is an anime internet channel you can subscribe to.

the reason the price is what it is is because this is a VERY niche market they are targetting, and they are playing it safe. not having subtitiles for a year sucks, but they are taking baby steps. if we support this as a community, and then they add subtitles, maybe one day they will release dvds, though if the fandom has proven anything to me, they won't buy it, they'll rather download it than actually support the shows they love

This is a completely different discussion than the DVD/Shout! one. For that there's a legitimate lack of sales numbers to justify the creation of those last volumes. I'll agree with you for that situation people should not complain. With something like that, it's unavoidable when the sales numbers aren't there. There has to be a demonstrated demand for the product for them to produce it. Shout just isn't big enough to make tons of those sets, not sell them, continue to do so, and take huge losses from it.

In this situation we're being asked to pay for a service, that while it isn't expensive, isn't exactly cheap either. The main demographic is the nearly 400,000 Japanese speakers living in the US so subtitles while welcome aren't the initial point. But in order to get people like us with the promise of Tokusatsu, they need to have that available soon. Maybe not by day one but certainly before a whole year has gone by. It's a tough sell to ask people to pay $20 a month for 1 or 2 channels for a year or more just for the hope to eventually get subbed toku on them.

If I knew I was getting subs from the get go I'd be all over it. That's a pretty damn good lineup of shows, Gingaman? Hell yes. But if they aren't subbed then I might as well grab the Hi No Tori torrents, even with them being hard to find.
