I think of one yen as one cent. So I move the implied point two spaces forward/divide by 100 in my head. It's not entirely accurate at all, but it allows me to get an idea of what I'm up against without having to memorize conversion rates.
Also, that's a lot of money for DVDs.

I know when I buy a series on DVD, I like to pay the better part of a grand for them.

I must say, if the Blu-rays/DVDs were the same prices as you'd find in the US, UK or Australia (or most parts of the world, really), I'd be really tempted to buy a few complete sets, even without the subs.

Oh Japan, you and your outrageously high DVD costs.

It's not really that strange. Back in the terrible old VHS days of the 80s, a movie would cost like $100 on VHS... in the US. And $100 in the 80s would be like $200 in today's dollars. Laserdisc was really expensive too, because it was aimed solely at collectors.
It's rental pricing. There wasn't yet a market for buying VHS so everyone rented, and to get a cut of the rentals the studios massively marked up VHS tape prices on their movies. It wasn't until the late 80s/early 90s that studios started realizing they could make a fortune selling $20 VHS tapes of big name movies, and the floodgates opened. At the time of this very post the conversion of 20,700 yen = $222.65. That price for only 16 episodes is highway robbery. Hell you can get the entire Might Morphin Power Ranger 19-disc DVD set from ShoutFactory right now for $79.99.
Or you could download the Tv-Nihon or Overtime subs for free-ish (you're paying for your internet connection). I love W, but F this set. |
