I remember a rumour a while ago that Marvel is planning a 'reboot' of sorts with Strange, Panther and Captain Marvel as the big 3 after Infinity War to shift focus onto different heros with a different story without having to bring old characters back. I'd say it's good to do that soon as we're getting pretty low on good entry points for newcomers now

It would be pretty neat if they did something like that, but unless they're considering to continue the MCU after Phase 3, then I don't think that's happening.
...Then again, Ant-Man and Guardians got sequels announced only after they were proven to be successes, so who knows. Maybe those 3 can usher in a new 'era' to the MCU.

Finally got to see Doctor Strange. Feels good to be caught up again.
I enjoyed the film. Mordo is seeming to be a pretty solid villain.

For Infinity War, the Guardians will be there, so you'd need to see the 2 movies. Thor's gonna be there, so you need Ragnarok, but then you wouldn't know about Thor's other things in his respective movies and Spidey's there so that's also Homecoming.
Also, Infinity War is the big event, just like the comics having big events. You don't need to see/read the stories leading up to it if you don't want to, but it will enhance the experience if you do. Quote:
Avengers was my second MCU movie and I had no fucking clue what was going on. Who are these people? Why should I care about them?

Whem Civil War was out I watched Age of Ultron, all three Iron Man films and the first Captain America movie, so I didn't have those issues again

I disagree somewhat. Civil War's entire premise stems from Age of Ultron's climax. The Sokovia attack (And destruction), Zemo's motivation, literally everything about why JARVIS is a walking quilt now (Which, unlike the Sokovia thing, isn't referenced to at all. No context is given for outside viewers who didn't see AoU), and the presence of Scarlet Witch.
It's not entirely necessary to watch all the films leading up to Civil War, I'll admit, but Vision, Wanda, and Ant-Man are given no introduction whatsoever for those not in the know. And 2 of those 3 characters play major roles in the film.

I completely disagree. The only thing you need in Civil War is to have at least watched Winter Soldier and The First Avenger. It was a Cap movie first, an Avengers movie second.
However... ...you're mixing these up. You don't need to see Infinity War to enjoy GotG. Also, Infinity War is the big event, just like the comics having big events. You don't need to see/read the stories leading up to it if you don't want to, but it will enhance the experience if you do. That's not the movie's fault though as the movie still gave great character moments for every character. Plus, if you don't know who the characters are at all you were born before 1962 and never picked up a single comic or watched a single cartoon ever. Again though, they enhanced your experience. The only movies you needed to watch before Civil War were The First Avenger and The Winter Soldier because that is where it all started, Bucky's resurrection occured and where Cap's distrust of corporations/committees making the decisions of what he can and can not do came from. I was willing to put that on poor wording, but what I meant was that to enjoy and understand Infinity War, you'd need to have seen GotG. Hell, Thor's Mjolnir looks a lot different and even Thor fans are confused due to that most likely being something introduced in Ragnarok. The less questions your audience has to ask, the better. If anything, shouldn't the fact Civil War is 'the big event' mean that it NEEDS you to know about the movies beforehand? My sister for example did enjoy the movie, but she had no clue about who everyone was other than Steve Rogers. Everyone else I know who saw the movie agreed it's amazing, but it's something moreso for the fans who've been keeping up rather than the average joe or jill I meant those specific incarnations of the characters, I never saw anything of Captain America outside an episode of 90's Spiderman I couldn't remember well at the time and thought the concept of him alone was dumb. Hell, Ant-Man is a lot different than his traditional incarnations, is he not?

But they are still those characters.
I get what you are saying, but part of it is expected that you have seen the other movies just like with the comics it is expected you have read the other series. As for Civil War, it's the third Captain America movie, so of course you need to have seen some of the prior stuff. If you walked into a store and wanted to read a comic series you weren't familiar with, are you going to start with issue 1, issue 37, or issue 100? Would you start watching Star Wars with Return of the Jedi? Would you start watching Breaking Bad at Season 4? |
