In the fictional city of Mitotakada, there's a legend of an Oni who terrorized the people from its mountain home of Mt. Kurogane. But was defeated by a team of 5 saints who used the power of faith, prayer, and salt to fight back against the Oni and bring prosperity to the people. These people are immortalized in history and worshipped as local legend. Their statues are all over town and people pray to them. They're known as the Hikari Sentai Saltman & their descendants continue the tradition, fighting off other evil Oni and defending their town.
Our hypothetical first episode would be our main lead seeing the Saltman in action, slaying an Oni & protecting his favorite hang out spot - some pizza shop. On his way home, he'd go through a dark alley and see another Oni! This one being a Pink and who faints right after asking for help. He thinks this is good - if he finishes her off instead, he can maybe join the Saltman Team! But...she looks so weak and defenseless. And she even begs for his help. He was always told the Oni were too prideful to ask Humans for anything - among other things. SaltRed then hit the scene and prepare to finish off the Oni, but our hero steps in front of them. He tries to reason with his hero...but it turns out SaltRed is a jerk and just tries to push him aside. He starts his chant to purify - and kill - the Oni, but our lead keeps getting in the way. Our Oni finally wakes up and...transforms?!? She becomes a Senshi, but clearly isn't a member of the Saltmen. She then gives the lead a morpher; which is an Oni mask. And when he puts it on, he transforms as well. Thus, our episode ends with the true Sentai Team taking the title screen! Yokai Sentai Oniman! (Demon Squadron Ogreman) or "Power Rangers: Monster Mash". The true story is that the human clergy have been hunting Oni and other Yokai for generations, spreading propaganda that they're bad when they just wanna live in peace. The formula of the show is that, usually, the Saltman will find an Oni, the Oniman will fight them off, then the REAL monster of the day is summoned to deal with them - the Angel Soldiers with their Monkers (wooden doll-looking monks) acting as the fodder. With the show going on, the Saltman slowly either being reformed from their wicked ways...or just being beaten into submission. Either or, their own transformation devices (I'm thinking Buddhist bead necklaces or something) get destroyed all until the Saltmen's leader, SaltWhite, is confronted. "Righteous Fire! OniRed!" Our lead for the season. He's a hardworking young plumber who just wants to eat pizza, but his strong sense of justice won't let him stand by when injustice is happening. He is especially protective of Pink and strives to protect her - sometimes to the point of being overzealous. "Noble Sincerity! OniPink!" While Red is our lead, Pink is the true team leader - or, she should be. She's the Princess of the Oni and fights for a world where her people can live in peace. She has a human disguise, but there are still ways to detect her which can. lead to hijinks; salt cancels her magic and reverts her to her Oni self, Oni blood is neon pink so if she pricks her finger or bites her lip, bright pink shows on the spot, ect. Pink defaults to Red's leadership, with a core part of her character arc being finding her courage & leading the team - especially when her knowledge is more useful. "Bold Courage! OniGreen!" The lovable coward of the team, Green is Red's coworker. He'd much rather not be a part of this - in fact, his mask just fell on him by accident with Pink telling him the mask makes him more brave with its magic - it doesn't, but it gets Green to fight. He's have two mini-arcs. The first is trying to be brave without relying on the mask and the second is meeting his own love interest, an Oni that they rescue in an episode who hangs around the cast in human guise as a support. "Strong Conviction! OniYellow!" A local electrician who just sort of hangs out for the first few episodes before joining properly. He's physically strong, but is lazy. Firmly does not wanna help or do anything unless he gets paid - which Pink promises ancient riches beyond his imagination if he puts the damn mask on. He's the team's powerhouse and does the most damage to monsters until Red's mid-season power-up. Slowly, we see that he's not just money grubber and does have a heart when he selflessly help others in a few episodes before we get the true reason for why he is the way he is: he was the rich son of a CEO and he gave a woman tons of money. His family called him a fool and cut him off and when the woman found out, she ditched him. "Swift Cunning! OniBlack!" A carpenter who hangs out at the pizza shop. He's a seemingly recurring background character that the audience can spot. He doesn't so much join the team so much as he...invites himself and steals a mask from Pink. He's a flamboyant, self-important guy who thinks he's the true hero of the story and everyone is just the opening act for him. He comically gets hurt for his arrogance all the time, being primed for slapstick. We get a few episodes, peaking into his past that he actually did have a lot of skills. He's good at a lot of things, but he always got out-shined by someone better, giving him his Napoleon complex. "Loving Justice! OniBlue!" The...6th Ranger? That can't be right...well whatever. Blue is an Oni who's been an recurring character, but we always see their human guise. They appear as a masculine character who works at the pizza shop before they get revealed to be a Female Oni who's been living among humans. They love humans - and pizza - and when a monster tries attacking the shop, she reveals her Oni form, determined to protect the shop and its workers even if they don't accept her. She gets her mask and the workers mostly welcome her, regardless of whether or not she's an Oni or human (with potentially a future episode of a worker being prejudice before learning their lesson). For Mechs, I'm thinking Each Oni gets one based on another Yokai. Red gets a Tanuki. Pink gets a Bakeneko. Green gets a Kitsune. Yellow gets a Kappa. Black gets a Kamaitachi. Blue gets a Kirin. |
