The Gavan movie isn't amazing, but is enjoyable. I loved the Go-Busters crossover 2-parter though.

The problem with the Gavan movie was that it felt... too safe. Like, they were writing a story that was basic (and it sometimes forgot which genre it wanted to be), and not exactly a GAVAN movie. Also, that movie needed more Kenji Ohba. It instantly got 1000x better when he appeared.

The Gokaiger one? No, that's a lot of fun and totally worth watching. Anything with the modern Gavan is a total write-off, though.

Gokaiger 02.
It's pretty awesome that a show completely ground in Sentai lore is so unconventional. I really like how different the Gokaigers they feel from other teams right now. It isn't like they're bad people, but it makes a nice change of pace to not have every Ranger screaming 'truth, justice, friendship, green peace and the American Way!' over and over again, they're just a bunch of dudes who don't like bullies. And maybe that wouldn't usually work for a team of heroes, but as they're never set up to be heroes in the first place, it works really well in context. Plus this cast are INTENSE. Like they're the first sentai team who I see line up and think to myself 'Oh you're in for it now', almost feeling sorry for the villains. Haha. They just have a great dynamic. Other than that, the production values are pretty great as well so far. I can't believe how brutal the Zangyack empire are. Am I really watching sentai? Plus, although not "good" CGI, it certainly adds a lot of life to the mech portion. It still isn't great, but it's more bearable than most. My favourite Gokai Change this episode was Hurricanger, that Shadow Dance group attack was awesomely stylish. The all red one was cool too, although this show is a little obsessed with Shinkenger (I know it was huge in Japan but still). The DekaRanger change was kinda lame though, felt like they were just padding at that point. Quote:
I need to finish Gokaiger once I get the rest of the episodes. also people here seem to shit talk Gavan a lot, so should I just avoid the Gavan crossover flick?
You should. It's gets pretty awesome. And speaking of which... Gekiranger 19-21 Holy shit, 19 got intense. The Gekirangers first utter defeat by Rio, who's mastered all of Hawk's and Jellyfish's teachings. And man was that a beatdown. Miki literally had to smack some sense into the three of them after they were down and about to give up. Also got a little more background on Retsu's brother. Not much aside form Rio mentioning that he defeated him before, which definitely pissed off Retsu. Very sort of Dragonball-esque promise Shafu made to Rio with him essentially saying, "These three have untapped potential to become more powerful in x amount of time, wouldn't you rather face them once they're stronger?" And they definitely got stronger with the introduction of the last three Kensei, Gorilla, Penguin, and Gazelle. I think Gazelle might be my favorite one out of all of 'em. I mean he says he just goes around beating poachers up with his fists? That has to be pretty surreal for the poachers though... I liked how the Gekirangers had to learn their weaknesses (which were the others strong suits) though Jan didn't really learn his lesson until 21. And Retsu's fight against Gazelle was pretty awesome. I didn't expect it to go on for as long as it did. He got the shit kicked out of him, but he managed to pull it off. The Kageki mode is pretty cool and Jan managing to beat the mess outta Rio was pretty pretty badass. This is the most serious Jan's ever really been. I mean he didn't really tend to goof off when shit went down, but he got pissed at the end of 19 which continued on until 21 until he learned started to get with the team spirit again. Interesting to see him get pissed enough to fight briefly with Retsu. They usually get along well enough. It was pretty dickish of Hawk and Jellyfish to say..."We'll destroy the city if the Gekirangers lose..." and then they attacked it a bit anyway. I was pretty surprised they showed the scene where the kids mom got crushed by rubble and appeared dead when her son tried to wake her up. Rin Jyuken is evil as shit. Rio even refers to the people of the city as 'humans' like he's no longer one himself. Also we get new Geki Beasts this episode. Weird that they can 'pilot' these beasts individually, but haven't done so yet with the Gekibeasts their suits are based on. And we get a new mech, GekiFire.....eh. I don't really like it as much as Geki Touja honestly. But the rest of the episodes? Pretty awesome. |

It was just the scenes of like the Zangyack using firing squads into the crowds, or smashing them aside with the weapons. It isn't explicit in the presentation, but the implication and suggested representation is terrifying.

Gokaiger 3.
Wow Super Megaforce, visually, is like a shot for shot remake of this. It looks at times, like they literally edited the Rangers into Gokaiger footage. While we're on that topic, I kinda wish Nick got a chance to cameo, as they could have done some really interesting things with this episode, given that MagiRanger and Mystic Force approach magic very differently. I wonder what kind of tests Nick would create? And it woulda worked really well too, given Noah is defined by being constantly unsure of his own abilities, he and Nick could relate a lot. I'm also really surprised they didn't use that Black Gokai change for Megaforce. Sure no one likes Alien Rangers, but that is one of Tommy's suits and a girl version of one of the RPM Rangers. Seems a better change to use than all of the fucking sentai only teams they used. I mean I know they transformed, but we never saw the fight. Speaking specifically of this show, the White Change was pretty great, as Big One is probably the only sentai hero to actually look like a proper superhero. That suit is awesome. Is JAKQ subbed? I don't care much for MagiRanger but knowing how different these characters are, to who they change into, was fun in a meta sort of way. There were some other things that kinda sucked though. Firstly, aren't all the Rangers dead? So what is Kai doing here? And why does Kai look like a Jedi? And while we're at it, the MagiDragon was just inside their boat this whole time without them realising? EH?! And considering they just got a giant robot dragon, their new finisher SUCKED. What happened to that awesome cannon rocket assault from last week? Is that really less effective then a few magic rings?
