Especially if you want people outside our fandom to actually like or enjoy this. So far, I've seen people in our fandom going because it's "giant robots" and to support that. There's no real reason for people who aren't in our fandom to see it otherwise.

Hell, I'm not even interested in seeing it.

Considering how much world building has been behind this movie, there's no reason to "leave your brain at the door."

The only thing people need to leave at the door is their cynicism and screaming kids so that we can watch the movie in freaking peace.

What world building? I've been following this a bit more than casually as a guy who digs giant robots and so far, there's been nothing to hook me in.
