Yeah, they could easily just be a bunch of animals likened to that period/location. Horses, buffalo, uh... prairie dogs? There's probably more.

The problem with that is it's so situational it's difficult to use well. A sea based Sentai would probably go the way of Kyoryu's music/dance theme and just be sporadically brought up.

Hell, the military/technology themed Ohranger used a sphinx as a main component. After that, I'm pretty damn skippy anything is fair game now.

I'm down with that. Perhaps this time there could be more exploration involved?

Everytime "time travel" comes up as a motif across various franshises it seems like the protagonists end up going back in time only to stay there for the whole series... as though it might as well not even be a motif.

I dunno. I don't think Japan has very many interesting time periods past what their Edo set provides.
Unless the characters travel the world, too, which would be both interesting and confusing

I may be,but half of the reason sentai is what it is is because of the mecha.
