Season 1 is all manga material while Season 2 is a filler arc. However, from what I have been told, they have made it so Season 2 doesn't ruin anything from the manga so they can just loop right back into the next manga arc with Season 3.
Oh, and I believe Season 1 covers the first 6 or 7 volumes, which is how a series should be adapted. The second season is a clusterfuck. It's not a filler arc, it's substituting for the real story, just using some of the fights and other scenes and placing them in completely random contexts that don't mean anything. They cut out an inane amount of content and just like...everything. They completely fucked the story over, and they completely fucked over their chances of continuing the story with manga material in any way that makes any sense (because root a doesn't make any either). It's just horrible. I still have fond memories of the first season, though I think it's something worth watching before reading the manga. Still maybe worth watching though. I think the last episode in particular is very good. There is no conceivable reason to watch root a at all, though. |

When it comes to anime based on manga, I think you should view it as it's own thing. For me, sometimes I watch the anime before I read the manga.

I notice that too. With manga, everyone wants the anime to be 100% perfect to the manga. When comic books from the US get adapted, people are like "They can do whatever they want".

That's such a false equivalence. American comic book adaptations are very rarely actual direct adaptations from specific comic book stories, so they get away with taking liberties. When they're advertised as directly adapting specific things though, whether it's comics or books or whatever, people definitely start looking for proper, faithful adaptations.
Plenty of people have Opinions about those things, it's not an anime thing. Even if you take an adaptation to be its own thing, (which hey, you definitely should, judging things on their own terms is the right way to go) that doesn't somehow make a garbage adaptation stop being a garbage adaptation, and if the adaptation bastardizes and shits on everything that made the original work good, people are gonna complain. This isn't a complicated concept. |

For example, it's not like Dragon Ball has been rebooted 6 times and has been going on for 50 years. It was a set number of volumes on a set storyline that had a beginning, middle, and end. That was it. However, I want the writers of the adaptation to make sure they at least get the characters right. Superman is supposed to be bright, colorful and hopeful. Flash is kind of th same way. Jonah Hex is a former confederate soldier whose tone changes based on the story, but he still has rules. Movies that don't follow the rules are wrong. However, if you do an adaptation of say The Killing Joke, it better damn well be accurate. If they do an adaptation of Flashpoint, it better damn well be accurate. |

There's a difference though. Comic books are just random stories that only sometimes connect into a larger plot. Manga is ALWAYS a continuous plot. Comic books have also been going on for 75 years with a constant amount of reboots and rewriting going on with the characters. There is no set version of some of the characters. Manga is usually a single stand alone story that goes from start to finish in a certain amount of time.
For me, I watch things to be entertain. Even if I never read the original source material, I can still enjoy it as it's own. Like I never read the Godfather novel, but I love the first movie. I didn't play the video games of Danganronpa and I still found the anime to be enjoyable.

episode 5, 6 and 7 of Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney.
Overall this was a great three party and a pretty good adaptation of the third chapter of the first game. They made some changes to the story but i think these changes were for the best, they changed part of the plot so things didn't have "first game syndrome" and i love that. Also i'm all caught up with the first season of the Yokai watch anime which just leaves me wondering... Sequel when!?

I generally like when an adaptation is like Ghost in the Shell, Trigun, Gantz, etc - it takes the general idea of the story and turns it into its own thing. What we're left with is the manga and the anime both being completely enjoyable. However, if the anime follows the manga pretty closely, with maybe some filler arcs thrown in, it's hard for me to choose which one to do first. On the one hand, I love reading manga. On the other hand, sometimes I have easier access to anime. I also sometimes feel like an anime is more of..."the full effect", having voice acting, music, animation, and sound effects. Death Note I found to be rather boring as a manga - the sound design added a LOT to the atmosphere of the series and was a much more enjoyable experience. But in general, I think I like reading manga more.
None of that really had anything to do with what anime I'm watching though.
