Try Sonic 2006, the best Sonic game ever.

Or Sonic Heroes, I honestly kind of like that one. The level design looks nice and team super attacks are always fun. Plus there's a pinch of problem solving, given the layout of the game's "three person team" gimmick.

Fast. (Sonic's team)
Tough. (Shadow's team)
Beginner. (Amy's team)
Mission Based. ("Find the Computer Room" Vector's team)

I actually played Sonic Heroes.
Not for any gimmicky team thing, but because the main villain was the only Sonic character I've ever mildly liked, Metal Sonic.

The only thing I hate about this game is that the ending is a total set up for a sequel... that hasn't happened after 5 years. ;-;

Ironically, this game, which received positive reception, never got a sequel while their crappy Sonic Riders series got 3

It's like Sonic Team vehemently refuses to be successful
