They have never mentioned a regeneration limit in the show at all. I never knew it existed until someone said it was talked about in the old series.

Anyway, this special more than made up for the mediocrity of Season 7.

Some people thought that with the Time Lords gone, the regeneration limit was no longer in force. It's not been explicitly stated on screen, though, to my knowledge. Although, 11 cheekily notes he can regenerate 507 times in the SJA episode, the Death of the Doctor.

I'm pretty sure there is a quote somewhere in which Moffat indicates he wants to address the regeneration issue. I'll try to find it. Spoilers (from sources that have been accurate in the past) for the Christmas Special seem to indicate that is the case.

Edit: Although any pending narrative drama at the regeneration limit was seemingly undermined by a certain scene towards the end of The Day of the Doctor.

How does that undermined anything? 12 regenerations = 13 Doctors total. We saw 13 Doctors as "all of them." That doesn't undermine the limit, that enforces it. Good set up for the next Doctor to have drama.

It doesn't matter what the intention was, fanwank or otherwise. It was portrayed on screen and pretty plainly spelled out. Moffat wrote and put something in the special that will undermine the drama of what is intended at Christmas.
