Now I'm caught up on Geats, thought I would pop my head in on King Ohger and check out their opening ep... holy crap, is this what sentai is like these days? This was one of the most incredible individual episodes I think I've ever seen in any toku show I think.
Like yeah, the CG was REALLY rough and heavily overused, but the scale of this... my goodness. And those shots straight out of Attack on Titan? Wild. The really striking Rangers, and how that translates to their suit actors in that little action scene? Oh mama. Even the mecha stuff, which I don't normally love, that first outting? Oh baby. I was gonna check a bunch of other first episodes and pick a series, but I might stick with this assuming it doesn't just fall off after here. This was rad.

Yes and no. Yes, Sentai these days can be pretty damn great, last year's Donbrothers was amazing, best Sentai I have ever seen, but the sheer scale of effects and so far consistent flow of storytelling that defines King-Ohger is very unusual.
Keep watching, it's great! And remember Donbrothers for another time. You should check that one out too |

Toei bought some new green screen tech for King-Ohger that’s really letting them cut loose with the special effects.

I mean don't get me wrong, the CG is still terrible (maybe a little better than usual toku standards, but still pretty horrid), but it is still very impressive to see whole, unique, locations being built basically from the ground up here. We are so used to everything in toku taking place in like carparks, warehouses and quarries, so this taking place in this elaborate fantasy world is still really impressive even with the technical limitations. Makes you also think of the places they can go in future, as they get better with the implementation of the tech.
