Kikaider is a must. I just got Wizard today, and I think I'm going to have to get Flame Dragon.

This is great news. It's a great time to get into collecting S.I.C. I've become a bit of Kikaider fanatic, so I can easily see myself continuing to buy just about any good Kikaider figure regardless of style and scale.

That Kikaider looks great, but I'm actually more interested in Hakaider, he looks awesome.

To be quite honest, these pale in comparison to the older SICs that were by Takeya (he also designed for Amemiya's "Hakaider: Mechanical Violator" movie).
Other than the SIC OOO's, I'm actually very disappointed with Kenji Ando's recent work/designs. They really feel like they're adding arbitrary details that don't add to the original designs. Despite their posability, the last Kamen Rider 1 and 2 re-redesigns for SIC have been terribly sloppy. Takeya's last Kikaider 01 set was beautiful and very poseable too, very well designed as a figure and as a redesign itself, it's very thoughtful. These new ones are really just adding lines to a regular humanoid body, it's good-fanart level, not SIC level for me. Honestly, Takeya's old Hakaider still feels a lot more intimidating and cool with way less lines. I think these are actually also closer to Ishinomori's original designs in how sleek they still feel, despite the additional textures and details. I really was hoping Takeya would be the one to return and redo all of the SICs instead of Ando redesigning every single one, including the classics... |

Honestly, other than the nifty addion of the piston-like exhaust things on the joints I don't see how that 01 design is any less "human body with lines" than the new Kikaider. The entire "intimidation" aspect is just muscle definition and a grimace.
I like it, but from the little I can infer from the design the new style figure looks to be following the exact same aesthetic.

I like it, but from the little I can infer from the design the new style figure looks to be following the exact same aesthetic. Kikaider 01 is the successor to Kikaider, his first appearance, he burst out of a Nio Guardian statue. Watch at around the 6:20 mark, The shapes used to depict his "muscles" are closer to Japanese Buddhist statues, in how bulbous they are. Takeya marries this look with the qualities of a motorcycle/car's shell. It's a very subtle and meaningful design for old fans, brings that "scifi-real" feel and also very exciting as an update. Btw, this was a damned good set, if you're an SIC fan. I really recommend it, it's one of my favorite toy sets around. |

Aha! That makes a lot of difference. Having seen the show myself I can definitely appreciate that a whole lot more now I see it comes with the statue parts as well. I still stand by my judgement that the aesthetics are largely similar, but that really is one hell of a set.
