No one is forcing anyone to include a gay character on a fairly conservative kid's show. If a character is conceived as gay and included in the lineup, you better believe there is intent behind it, as the creators would have to fight Toei, a major corporation that absolutely does not want to court controversy, to include him or her in the show.

Be it controversial or not, I think Matrixbeast is right in a way; why have a gay character just because they are gay? That is insulting all on it's own. Is there anyway to know that we haven't had a gay character before? Not every member of every season has an episode where it is flat out said that they like the opposite sex. ShinkenBlue never showed any interest towards a woman, nor has ToQ1-go. The girls have their faint admiration for the opposite sex displayed in different episodes, but there are characters where it is never even hinted at. Then there was the ambiguity that ToQ6-go gave us this season; I thought it was funny, but there are a ton of people that took great offense to it.

Having a gay character just it can be the first defined gay character is stupid and unneeded. I don't think sexual preference is nearly as big of a deal in Japan as it is in the west.
