The Heisei trilogy is the best place to start IMO. The only problem is that if you do that you're also starting with the very best and then nothing else (as fun as the other Gamera films are) really come close to it.

Personally I think the second movie, Gamera vs Barugon, is very good. Generally it's a little more serious than the other Showa Era films, it also deviates from the usual Gamera trope of have the main human star be a child, all the main cast are adults. The only real downside is that it picks up pretty much where the first one ends, but it does start with a small recap on how Gamera got to where he is so you shouldn't be totally lost.

I'll look into it. Now is it just giant monster fighting or is there more to it?

well it starts out with four guys making plans for 3 of them to sneak into an island where the fourth hid a giant "opal" he found during the war and there's some greedy betrayal once they find it. and that guy let's his greed get in the way a few times during the movie.

Every Gamera movie for the most part has an official DVD release in North America and are fairly cheap to get on Amazon. However the majority, if not all of them are up on Youtube.

Why not buy them? I bet you can get most of them for dirt cheap, the three Heisei-movies should be sold as a box, even in Germany I could buy one of those for like 15 bucks.

They have been out on home video in the US for a while now by Mill Creek Entertainment. For the 90's Gamera films (1995-1999) then I would get the sets from Mill Creek Entertainment. For the Showa films, I would try to track the DVD's from Shout! Factory. They have some good commentary tracks on the first two releases and I believe Shout! put all of the Showa films on DVD a while back. Media Blasters (Tokyo Shock) has put Gamera the Brave on Blu-Ray and you still may find it in stock at local retail.

If I where I would go with the 90's Trilogy first. The Showa movies are fun for what they are. If you like campy stuff from that era then you should get a kick out of it. Just avoid any public domain releases of the Showa Gamera films.

Honestly I'm just used to downloading all the Japanese stuff so just a little weird to buy them but since they are available here I will look into getting them.
