Late August, 1993: As my seventh birthday approaches, I start seeing these ads for a thing called "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers". I grew up watching Voltron, Transformers and Robotech in syndication, so the thought that you could actually have live action combining robots blew my little mind.
So on or around this date back then, about a week before my birthday, we decide to go to the Maryland State Fair. Before we do we hit the local Toys R' Us... and lo and behold, the Megazord is out on the shelf. My parents get it and we go on to the fair. Now I don't know how you were when you were a little kid, but delayed gratification was not exactly a strong point for me, so I grumbled my way through the fair until I could get home and open that baby up. To this day the original Ultrazord has an important place in my collection. I actually used it as a prop in one of my reviews for Collected Editions. The show and toyline have had their ups and downs and I almost wish I didn't follow Sentai so that I wouldn't be dreading the adaptation of ToQGer. But I'm still proud to be a fan. |

Happy Birthday, PR! My favorite moment was when Jason wore the Dragon Shield. As a kid I always played with friends and family members my own age and everyone wanted to be Tommy. So when that happened, I had to collect all the strength in my Scythe-Kid body to keep my head from exploding. It eventually did, and there were sweet snacks, nachos, punch was served and PB&J sandwiches with the crust cut off, it was a good weekend.

I honestly don't remember how it all started for me- I really can't remember much before Power Rangers. It's as much a part of my early childhood as air shows and Sonic the Hedgehog (and St. Louis sports franchises... and museums). Some people think DC or Marvel when the think of Superheroes; Justice League, or the Avengers. I've always took pride in the fact that mine rolled with a whole lot of flash and style.
Best moment, though... Definitely meeting Jason Faunt this year. An extremely cool guy in person and took a few moments to actually talk with me. He's always been my favorite Red, and now I have solid grounding for why. Here's to you, MMPR. I can't imagine life without you.

Ah, Power Rangers, the show that pretty much transformed my childhood. I can't remember liking anything earlier except Sonic the Hedgehog, so it's really something nostalgic for me.
My earliest memory of Power Rangers was seeing the Megazord formation in a TV commercial (specifically, the Sabertooth Tiger folding its legs in). I was so floored, what was this amazing thing? Got my parents to find the times for me, watched one episode, and I was hooked. I have to also say Power Rangers was a bit of a spoiled time for me. I got all the Megazords from the first season (and all except Tor from the second), and quite a few action figures and weapons, too. Never had it so good again. And perhaps a bit of a sentimental thing here, but memories of Power Rangers tie very strongly to memories of my maternal grandparents too. My grandparents bought a large chunk of my Zords after my parents stopped, and I remember going to their place and playing daily. Dragonzord, Tigerzord, Thunder Megazord, it was so nice. My grandfather got a stroke soon after, and my grandmother passed away a few years after that, so my strongest memories spending time with them, funnily enough, involved Power Rangers. MMPR, I'm sorry for being embarrassed of you once, but you were very important to me. Happy Birthday!
