Anyway, yeah, Den-O is my favorite Kobayashi show even over the two that have the extra weight of being my first Rider shows – one of which is also pretty much an objectively perfect Rider show – so that should tell you something about my level of enthusiasm for this series. One thing I'd like to immediately contribute for now is just that this is another Rider scored by Toshihiko Sahashi, and Den-O's background music is naturally quite distinctive and instantly recognizable. It took me a bit to realize how much I loved it, but it's one of my favorites for sure now.

It's the slow-motion sequence where he's getting beaten up (again) by the Street Youths. The voiceover is him wondering if he's about to killed, and being sorry for how that might make Airi feel.

I'm not sure I'd call Amazons "pretty much an objectively perfect Rider show", although it's not without its brutal charms in the early going. Jin's an all-time great, for sure.

I know, I know, you mean OOO. I've definitely referred to OOO as one of the best seasons for how it's not the best anything, but never bad at anything. Ryuki had some ups and downs for me, so I'm excited to see what Older And Wiser Kobayashi wants to talk about, and how she plans to do that. I'm already very into something here that she revisited in OOO, where the monsters/villains/threats all seem to be drawn from people. The teaser for Episode 2 seems to indicate some OOO-style Therapy Via Monster Detonation, and that's a Phase 2 Heisei thing I'm thrilled to get back to. The whole thing with random monsters wandering into an episode, and then the difficulty of linking the monster to the story thematically... very keen to get a more emotionally-connected threat in these shows.

It's a great accompaniment to Ryotaro's haplessness and the rapidly shifting environments. It's very liberating, which I like.

I was going to save this for later on, but you’ve basically brought up one of my main gripes with the series: the music. I won’t go into my issues with the songs until I have a reason to, but the score just gets repeated over and over again in basically the exact same points within the episodes that it kills my appreciation for it. And I didn’t have much to begin with, since I’m not big on jazz incidentals (give me rock, percussion or synthesisers any day)

I just really think the jazz fits the series tone better? Blade was a dark series about surviving failure, so it needed a propulsive, aggressive soundtrack. So far, Den-O is an adventure series about getting in touch with your emotions while trying not to get beaten up by monsters, so a lighter, quirky soundtrack supports it.

Ryotaro's trying, though, and I love that the show never forgets that. He would like to defeat the Bat Imagin, he just has zero ability to do it himself.

Side note I remember watching the first two episodes a bunch of times back in the days. It was a breath of fresh air given how whimsical it was compared to the previous 7 shows.
