It was not great. There's a ton of time and effort spent trying to make you care about a family that, for me, was terminally uninteresting. The monster fights are good, the military stuff is solid, Ken Watanabe commits, but all of the family drama poisons the film.
And, like, your mileage may vary, but I'm genuinely not sure how you do a Godzilla film in a post-Pacific Rim world. Once you've seen giant robots fight kaiju... I don't know how you go back? |

I never thought of it this way until I read that comment by you, but the guy seems to secretly be some kind of harbinger of the end-times.

Basically, yeah. There's some fun references that even an outsider like me got, and an impressive level of scale, but Jesus Christ there's so much time on this dumb family. I don't mind human characters in a kaiju film, but, like, Kong: Skull Island did it right. Military, adventurers, scientists, bureaucrats, whatever. These are people I'm cool with seeing in a giant monster movie. Outside of that, hard pass.

I enjoy it when I saw it in theathers. People are 50/50 on the movie because I see a lot of people who like it because of the Kaiju battles. Meanwhile, I see people hating on it. It was like how The Predator was in 2018 because you had people that both loved and hated that movie.

I'm rather surprised that you, a major Sonic fan, didn't plan your movie budget better to go see this.

Well, less of a harbinger, and more of a peak. King Ghidorah may be Godzilla's archenemy, but MechaGodzilla's arrival is an event.

I didn't think Godzilla: King of the Monsters was a bad film. It wasn't great but it's definitely not worst movie territory.
I've encountered a review of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie yesterday and the reviewer loved the film. Take it with a grain of salt, but it does appear to be a film that actually tried to be faithful to the franchise instead of being a half-assed family film. Still a family film since it's for a general audience, but isn't an Alvin and the Chipmunks or Smurfs style film. It's more like a buddy cop film with Sonic lore thrown in and one of the buddy "cop" happens to be Sonic, who is the Sonic we know and love from the games and tv shows. So again take it with a grain of salt and go in with an open mind. That's what I plan to do, as I really can't see them dropping an additional $90 million to fix Sonic's appearance on a half-assed family flick. They would have cut their losses and released it as is if that were the case. Last edited by acdcguy; 02-12-2020 at 09:40 AM.. Reason: Clarifying the final statement. |
