Or at least costumes that look anything at all like the originals. Even First/Next and Amazons got that part right. Quote:
I don't even dislike this direction, I just dislike that it's Black. I would've loved to see an update to the Black design, or even an evolution like RX. This is just a Kamen Rider. A cool-looking Kamen Rider, but not Black. |

And by the way, this applies not only to Black. How often does a rider become not an ordinary Japanese guy, but a native from the jungle, who is hit by a big city almost more than monsters? And how often were designs as grotesque as Ten-Faced Demon Gorgos? Nevertheless, the remake just ignored this part for the sake of its own history, so as not to be just a pale copy with cosmetic changes. Last edited by Mesnick; 09-01-2022 at 01:08 AM.. |

I was surprised at how Nobuhiko seems like he is depicted as a kaijin revolutionary of sorts. Now I'm curious how Kotaro fits in all of this. Maybe he's the former century king or kaijin leader who went into hiding or something after a certain event that cost him someone dear to him, etc. And years later this younger Nobuhiko steps up to succeed him as century king 2.0.

Yes, it is the Black Sun. If it makes it easier to enjoy the show that way, just consider him another rider, who related to Black only by a similar name. In the end, this is not a direct sequel, where familiarization with the original series is mandatory, but what the director was inspired by watching it.
I'm sure if I were a fan of the original Amazon I'd have disliked Amazons. Hell, I'm not a fan of Amazon and I disliked Amazons. But Black is one of my favourites, and considering he's a lot of people's favourites, seeing an iteration that bears hardly any resemblance to the character is naturally going to be disappointing. You can justify it all you want, but it doesn't change the fact that the connection just isn't there. One of the Riders is literally black, the other is silver. That is how much is resembles the original series and character. With Kamen Rider no stranger to total reinvention on a yearly basis, it feels especially cheap that they're cashing in on one series' popularity on a not-even-superficial level. If you weren't going to make the character resemble Black then why make him Black? Why not expand the roster rather than retreading if the retreading serves no purpose? This eerily reminds me of the 2017 Power Rangers movie. This also feels especially off since we have Shin Kamen Rider which is quite faithful. |

For me, the basis of Black is the story of two brothers who were turned into enemies by a dark force. And whether this force will be a mystical purpose or a political idea is secondary for me personally, because this is a layering on the backbone of the plot. But I know for sure that watching the same series, only slightly modernized (because, let's be honest, they are clearly not a blockbuster for $ 150 million, and the special effects may well look even worse than the original), I would be less interested than this show, whatever it is. For when I have a desire to revisit Black, I watch the original, and not looking for something similar or related. But here, of course, everyone has different tastes. And I understand that when you don?t like something, you want to write about it, but I still think that the previous remakes roughly showed what to expect and there is nothing to be surprised at. |
