From my little perspecitve, Power Rangers is in a much more solid place than GI Joe. FOr a start, Power Rangers actually existed when I was a kid, and still feels like it's aiming towards that kid market today, whereas the new GI Joe stuff I've seen feels more like it's hitting the nosalgia market.
Plus, ya know, GI Joe is violently American. Doesn't help the brand much worldwide.

What gets me is that part of the thing that holds G.I. Joe back these days is- apart from the fact that even though we live in the Revenge of the 80s, those days are long gone and ain't coming back no matter how hard certain parties try- that the biggest attraction it had back in the 80s wasn't the characters... it was the vehicles. And a vehicle-heavy line like that is something that's just not feasible in this day and age and never will be again.

I've never really done Power Rangers, so I'm probably wading in way over my head here, but I think the Transformers comparison is pretty apt.
Transformers was a hugely popular toyline and TV series for a few years in the 1980s, before vanishing from the public eye. It carried on through a variety of popular incarnations that never quite regained its former widespread acceptance, until a live-action movie attempted to leverage the nostalgia of adults who grew up on the original incarnation. It connected, massively, and allowed for the current franchise ubiquity. Power Rangers was a hugely popular toyline and TV series for a few years in the 1990s, before vanishing from the public eye. It did not connect, keeping the franchise as a bit of an also-ran. Like, I know some folks in their mid-20s and early-30s who still have very strong feelings about the original MMPR stuff (making time each year to see the Rangers who show up for C2E2) in the same way some folks in their 40s and 50s have very strong feelings about G1 Optimus and Megatron. I think someday there'll be a Power Rangers movie that gets that franchise to a higher prominence. There's too much money in it for Hasbro to stop trying, you know? But I think the moment for a MMPR reboot came and went. Anything after this would probably need to be wholly original. Anyway, just my semi-outsider take! If I'm way off-base, let me know! Because think of it, if Power Rangers becomes successful (or, you know, successful-er than usual) it would help Kamen Rider, Ultraman, Garo, or maybe even Sentai itself, to have a chance for success worldwide.

Is MMPR the most well-known PR series to the general public? (asked a stupid question)

By far. It's frankly very fair to say that the general public barely knows about any power rangers beyond mighty morphin at all.

I think the issue with Power Rangers stems from lack of ambition and creativity. Saban had initial success because it was literally lightning in a bottle. The stars aligned all at the right moment and the show became an unpredictable success for what it was. Every new incarnation of Power Rangers is Saban or someone else attempting to replicate that flash in the pan. Which just is not happening. The only way to move the franchise forward is to balance nostalgia with something new and not rely too heavily on trends.
The 2017 film failed because not only was it too far removed from the original while still maintaining its basic concept, but it also tried to hard to be another Transformers or Iron Man. Studios fear the helmet and spandex for some reason. If the franchise wants to have widespread success it cannot rely on what's trendy, but instead embrace what makes it unique, embrace the cheese, while building on top of it. World build. Establish a proper lore. Bring back familiar faces besides a cameo. Take familiar designs and build off of them. There's this new concept for a film by Hasbro making the rounds of a rebooted MMPR team that time travels, and has a female red ranger. Why? Bring back Time Force if you're going the time travel route. Why break what's already established? In my opinion, they need to bring back the original MMPR actors on an epic quest where they interact with some other previous rangers, and lead into the Shattered Grid story line. |
