I find it weird that most of the games ive bought this year are in the Strategy RPG genre which is a Genre I didn't really care about before this year.
Ive been playing Chroma Squad the past couple of days, my rangers are named: Nathan May Ken Sandra Randall

This year is the 30th anniversary of Final Fantasy. I became aware of this when ProJared started a Let's Play of the original NES game back in March. I was in need of a game to play at the time and realized there's a handful of numbered FF games I haven't beaten and/or played. I started with the original because I had a VC copy that I never beat. Eventually, I decided to play all me favorites as well and now I have a goal for this year: Beat every numbered FF game...and whatever other FFs I want to play
Here's the general rules I'm going with: First rule: No MMOs. Nothing against them, it's just that they aren't really meant to be beaten. Plus, I'm not willing to do subscription gaming. By the way, is XI even playable anymore? Second: My goal is for XV to be the finale of this. I do not own a system that it can be played on, so while I'm saving for that I'll be focusing on the other games. Priority are ones I haven't beaten or played. The following I've beaten over the years: IV, IV: The After Years, V, VI, VII, VII: Dirge of Cerberus, Tactics, VIII, IX, X, X-2, XIII, XIII-2 (maybe a few others I'm forgetting) What I've beaten this year for far: FF NES (Beat it on April 1st oddly enough) III DS (Can't remember exactly when, but it was early May) XII PS2 (today, actually) Currently playing: IV DS (beaten before, playing on the side) II PSX Final Fantasy NES: I got about halfway years ago and just lost interest. After watching some of ProJared's early episodes where he goes over some basic stuff, most of which are in the manual the VC doesn't have, I felt a lot better about trying again. I did use guides and maps as well to make it easier on myself. Once you get the airship, I feel this one becomes more fun. The game has a lot of problems and cheap tactics, but I'm glad I finally beat it. III DS: Pretty much the same feeling I have about the first game, but with different annoyances. The main issue is the game loves all it's new toys and wants you to use them a little to much. Mini dungeons are annoying. I will give it this though, the moment you realize your starting area in the game is only one tiny point on the world map is a great one. If you have a choice, keep away from the DS version. Mognet is unable thanks to the DS Wi-Fi no longer working. XII PS2: Not gonna lie, I hate this game. I'm not sure if it's the worst FF I've played, but definitely low on the list. The characters are bland and unimportant to their own story and the game play is crap. XII tries so hard to be a single player MMO, but fails miserably. If I had the skill and time, I would love to make an essay on comparing XII and Xenoblade and how Xenoblade does everything XII was trying to do better. I say this because I put off playing Xenoblade for years because it looked like it played a lot like XII. Anyways, my original save was at the final dungeon and I've tried a few times over the years from the beginning to give the game a second chance, but couldn't stand it every time. So this time, I loaded the original save and level grinded enough to beat it so I'll never have to play it again. I will end on a nice comment, XII is a pretty game. IV DS: Now here's something I will praise. IV was my first FF. I played it on an emulator back around 2000 or 2001 when that was still fairly a new thing. This is the game where the story and characters took center stage and the gameplay was still great. The DS version is by far the best version of IV they've made (at least in English). It's the only one that has a very solid translation (and it only took 4 or 5 tries). Coming off I and III where you're the "Heroes of Light" and not much else, IV becomes even more meaningful. The main character Cecil is a Dark Knight ordered to kill innocent people by his king. You start the game off playing a murderer that has to redeem himself. That's impressive for a SNES game (though the old translations try to soften the tone). This time around I'm playing the New Game Plus mode with fun stuff like the ability to rack up lots of EXP from a single battle and turn off encounters. Having a lot of fun revisiting one of my old favorites. Lastly for today II PSX: So I bought FF Origins to play II. I got it off Amazon for $10. I picked this one because it was the cheapest hard copy option. I started playing it on the PS3...and some of you might know where this is going. Turns out that the hard copy (the PSN version is fine) of Origins is one of the rare PSX games that does not work properly on the PS3. II can not be beaten because the game crashes at some triggers. I checked and there's at least one point you can not get pass. This is why I have the PS2 hooked up and why I skipped on over to XII to get it out of the way. Anyways, I only got a little ways into the game. The plot seems decent enough, though I see the issues with the battle system. It's a neat idea until you realize how you're suppose to increase HP. I'm going start over on the PS2 hardware soon. Thankfully I didn't get to far into the game before the glitch happened. Last edited by Blade Raider; 05-23-2017 at 02:24 PM.. |

I've been playing Overwatch a lot today, I need that new Sentai Genji skin (that looks more like Kamen Rider than Super Sentai...)

I've finished my playthrough of Final Fantasy II (PSX edition). Seems that my PS2 has issues with reading just this disc. I've tried others and everything works (side note, I loaded the Armada game and Gundam Battle Assault 2 for the first time in years, they're still fun). Because of that, I did long play sessions in hopes of finishing it before the PS2 craps out completely.
Anyways, about the game itself, I'm a little mixed on it. The story surprisingly engaging at first. It's basically Star Wars, but for a NES game that's kind of impressive. You are a group of rebels that are sent on missions to fight the Empire. The plot fizzle outs toward the end. I also spotted similarities to FFIV's plot, though mostly just the same tropes being used more effectively. That said,There is also a lot of backtracking in II, mainly to the rebel's base. I think it helped sometimes as a good way to not get lost when you weren't sure where to go next. This is the kind of game plot I give credit for effort mainly due to the time it was made. One of the more engaging things is the Keyword system. Some NPCs will say words in red. You can memorize those words, ask them about those words, or use items. Rather than the NPC just telling everything about says Dargoons, they'll just mention them and you have to memorize the word and then ask about Dargoons or maybe they don't know and you have to ask someone else. I've seen Western RPGs do this sort of thing with choices, but those all become convoluted very quickly. This is a simple version of that that only does what the it's suppose to, keep the player engaged in what being said. I wish Square tried to use this more, but then I remember how convoluted modern FFs are. Also, there's a bookcase that you can use most of the Keywords on to learn more about them. As for the battle system, I think there's a good battle system here, but it's a mess. The idea is stats go up as they're used in battle (or menu for some things) and this gets rid of "Levels." The problem is it doesn't get rid of levels, it adds more. Instead of increasing the character's Level, you now have to level each stat one by one. There are 10 Attributes (HP, STR, etc.), 8 weapons (including unarmed and shield), and 16 Spells (there's more spells, but characters can only have 16 max). This would be fine if some weren't a pain in the ass to level. The saving grace of this game's battle system are the 2 weapons that might be the 2 most broken things in Final Fantasy. The Blood Sword and Healing Staff. The Blood Sword will always hit for a precentage of the monster's MAX HP. Not current HP, but max. This means high HP bosses are easier than a lot random encounters. And you get 2 of that sword. Meanwhile, if the Healing Staff is used on a party member, they are healed. If the character has a good staff level, it will heal more HP than any spell could hope to in this game. All in all, FFII was an experiment that went badly. I feel this game is mostly forgotten because later games followed up on every concept in this game and did it better...except the Keyword system. I kind of wish another FF title tried again with that. |

Playing two games at the moment.
One of them is Tomodachi life on 3DS, I've had so much fun with this game since I got it a few weeks back, Ganondorf and Hatsune Miku had a Baby, so did Professor Layton and Trucy Wright, Vegeta wanted to date Dawn but she rejected him, it's fun. The other is Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, I'm playing this just in case the disc begins going rotten soon so I want to experience this classic.

Just beat Ryse: Son of Rome this weekend. Because it was free, so why the hell not? Actually wasn't that bad of a game. Certainly looked good.
Now I'm playing through LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga with my wife. Been making short work of it and are already to Episode VI, but definitely need to replay a lot for studs and bricks.

So I've started a replay of V (using the PSX version). I haven't played this one in years and don't remember much of the story. I do remember enjoying the game and it's Class system. For some added fun I'm randomizing my Classes. There's 6 Classes to start with, so I rolled a die to select them (I'll probably draw names or something once I have more than 6).
Rules are simple: 1) No duplicate classes unless a character has mastered all other classes. 2) A character can only change after they've mastered that class, again randomized, but will be a new class. So after getting the first set of Classes my party looks like this: Bartz - Black Mage Reina - Knight Galuf - Thief Faris - Blue Mage That's right, no White Mage. This should be at least a bit interesting. |

Change of plans on FFV. Still doing randomized classes, but now it'll be every 3 job levels. I wanted to do this to make me use unique job classes and I forgot how long mastering a job took in this game (the endgame has great places to grind those levels). By the time I'll master any of these, I'll be near the end of the game.
So, I got to right before the Floating Ruins before making this change. Here's my new classes: Bartz - Black Mage-> Monk Reina - Knight-> Time Mage Galuf - Thief -> Bard Faris - Blue Mage -> Trainer Okay, now that's a challenge of a party. The good news is I have at least some healing options now. Reina can cast Regan (and use the super helpful Healing Staff) and Galuf has the Str. Song which also casts Regan. Trainers have limited use, so the ability to use Blue magic on Faris is a help. Bartz is the only heavy hitter here. I feel this set up will last a dungeon or 2 rather than a 1/3 of the game like the first set up. |
