I'm not all that familiar with Metal Heroes, but it seems like it would be really ripe for some kind of Netflix or Amazon exclusive series. It would allow them to bank on the nostalgia of older fans for its revival more easily than if it was released as just a typical tokusatsu for kids on TV, and would help it stand out from the crowd.

Well it also doesn't help that this new Gavan dude cannot act and is not even a likable character.

I love the original Gavan series, but that man just gets cooler as he gets older for some reason. As for a Metal Hero show, I would prefer it to be something like Amazons, maybe not in tone or violence, but something kept far, far away from Super Hero Time. By all means make a few toys for the collector crowd, but last thing I want is a new Space Sherriff with, say, fruit-shaped padlocks. Anyway, started Timeranger last night, only had time to watch one episode, but I liked it. Good start for my first oldish sentai in a while. Last edited by Spiteface; 08-15-2017 at 01:32 PM.. |

A slightly more serious tone would be cool but not necessarily as edgy as Amazons, gotta be something in between. |

Breh. Toei doesn't care. Kyuranger may have hit an all time low for ratings but Toei's happy with it as the toy sales are all they care about

How so? Sentai has been on for 38 years straight that the series can clearly use a break as they just keep making the show worse each year since Gokaiger ended. They need to give it a year off to find new blood who can reinvorgorate the series both from a ratings standpoint and from a story telling one. They're safezone approach is not working anymore.
We need a modern day Sugimura. Besides, what would taking the show off the air fix? The show changes almost completely every single year. A new cast, a new writer, everything. The problems you listed off are things that have less to do with the show itself and more to do with Toei as a company. Watching none Toei Tokusatsu and comparing them to whatever Toei is doing that year is proof enough that every company has it own style no matter who the writer or director is. Taking the show off the air, or putting up a new one in its place, would at best be simply be old problems with a new coat of paint. An changes to *fix* the show can be made without missing a year. Besides, who are you to say the show isn't working anymore? I've heard plenty of people say they like Zyuohger and Kyuranger and, toy sales wise, the only shows since Gokaiger that I know have been failures were Go-Busters and Ninninger. Kyoryuger and Toqger were both successful, I haven't heard of Zyuohger being anything other then average, and Kyuranger been doing pretty good so far. The only show that seems to have been a failure in every way was Ninninger. |

I binged my way right through Zyuranger! It wasn't the most mind blowing thing ever, but it was cute, fun, whimsical, and a touch melancholy. Having only watched Deka and Aba before, it was very interesting to go back and see an earlier show. I liked that the fomat wasn't as concrete back then, especially since they didn't force a mech fight at the conclusion of every story! The protagonists may not have been the most distinctive, but they were likeable and always fun to watch. Bandora and her crew were just a campy delight though, and I loved every second of it! I couldn't keep it together whenever they randomly burst into a villainous song and dance number, it was great. All together, it really did give the feeling of a fairy tale, not all that preoccupied with the finer points of making sense, but crazy and facinating nonetheless. A new favorite for me! I have a bunch more Sentai DVDs incoming though, so who knows how long that will last.

Since you loved Zyu, you will definitely love Dai and Kaku. They are all done by the same guy and all have the same feel, but none of them are the least bit alike.
