The Don family name got brought up casually between Tarou and Jirou, wondering how it relates them. Jirou excitedly speculated that they're brothers, but since they're both 21 years old, I thought Tarou was right to be skeptical about it. It's very unlikely for brothers to be born so close together, unless they're half-brothers with different mothers.
Kitou's signature dish is also a plagiarism now! She mentioned before that she couldn't make it anymore ever since Tarou gave it a low score, kind of like how she's in a slump with manga ever since being labeled a plagiarist. I think Shiina has some kind of reason for hiding his identity under a bunny suit, like maybe he's the Penguin Jyuto we haven't seen yet, or even Hanamura being a control freak type ex-bf. Or both! Any other theories about this? I pity Jirou being ostracized by his team, I can relate to that from having bad experiences in my school years. It's not his fault that his split personality keeps rampaging whenever he loses his confidence. I actually have to praise Jirou for keeping his head clear even after being left behind, he's really trying his best to be recognized for his qualities, not just his flaws.

Yeah, this one didn't disappoint me! There's just no way it could've, really. First of all, it's another example of that Kamen Rider Faiz flavor coming to the forefront. The relationship between Tarou and Sonoi is great, of course, but any time the other Nouto get involved outside of the fighting, it tends to be pretty great too. It's not quite the Faiz thing of basically having two sets of protagonists, because we don't follow the Nouto to that extent, but they've very much come to be characterized as three people living their own lives, staying true to their own sense of justice (they barely feel like true villains anymore), and the way that lets them be a part of more relaxed stories like this, hanging out with their own sworn enemies, will always make for an entertaining dynamic. There's never a spot in this episode where Haruka is worried about the truth being revealed or whatever, nor are we as viewers ever made to feel some sort of tension about her being around Sonoza. It's just a cute little plotline where he gets really into her comics, and she tries to use the power of artistic expression to bridge a gap between cultures. And of course, that's the other big thing I love here. It's an episode that's all about Haruka rediscovering her passion for her craft, and I'd love that story even if it didn't center around my favorite character, so the fact that it does just propels it that much further. Actually, I kind of have a new appreciation for Haruka's egotism after this one, because put in the context of her being an artist, it just sort of feels natural? Like, on some level, if you're putting something out into the world with the intent that people will enjoy it or even be moved by it, a certain level of self-confidence is maybe necessary? She takes it a bit far sometimes, but if she didn't have the personality she did, would Haruka have managed a hit manga series before she's even out of high school? Something to think about, I guess. I mean, I don't know, this whole idea came to me as I was writing it, so maybe it's less interesting than I'm imagining. Which brings me to what makes the meat and potatoes of this episode so much fun -- the way it explores the whole creative process. Sonoza turns out to be a shockingly adept editor, providing a lot of entirely reasonable criticisms regarding how distinctly unrefined the ideas Haruka is putting to the page right now are, and watching Haruka realize she's in a slump is... just really true to life, I guess? If I may point out the obvious, this episode was written by a writer, so I have to imagine Inoue was able to let a fair amount of his own experiences inform this plot. There's a sense of honesty to the story I adored. What's pretty crazy is that in spite of how much I'd expect that to be the thing dominating the plot, I thought this one also did a lot of the more "typical" kind of writing Donbrothers often seems uninterested in. It's already a major advancement for Haruka's character, renewing her original goal and cementing a new rival character for her, but there's also all these little things with Jirou, right down to him mentioning his desire for a Robotaro form of his own. I repeat -- they actually set up a piece of merch a little. It's not every day Donbrothers does that! So yeah, between the way it moves other pieces around the board beyond the one it's focused on, and the added detail of stuff like matching shots up perfectly with all those comic panels, I think this week has a ton going for it. The foundation is already insanely strong, and the stuff built up around it is nothing to sneeze at either.

Wow, whatever happened to delivering joy? Taro let himself into that guy's house just to be a jerk! Or was him provoking him into becoming a monster and airing out his issues his way of helping...
Anyway, I'm really happy the show is picking back up Haruka's manga adventure, and it came back in a really big and funny way too. Honestly though, nothing in that story she drew up seemed too outlandish for a normal episode of Donbrothers. Maybe we'll get our love quadilateral after all... |

It’s a very Inoue-like move to have Jiro is walking around as ‘Dangerous Jiro’ in last week episode and then suddenly reverted him back as normal lovable Jiro in this episode for no discernible reason. For those who had questions like this for Inoue, maybe just let it slide. Don’t fret over something simple like that when we’re talking about Inoue. It’s even a breath of fresh air and a huge grace when Inoue PREPARED a storyline for Jiro’s mecha. Well, that might be my own monologue to myself if I had one other side, like Kagero or the ‘Dangerous Jiro’.
One nice thing that I noticed in this episode was how Taro gradually becomes to care more about Haruka. Dude felt a bit disappointed and lonely without Haruka around. There’s a single scene in this episode where Don Momotaro took a single breath and halt when confirming Haruka’s whereabouts lately. It’s subtle but I love that the show still slowly but surely progresses the relationship between Taro and his companions, especially Haruka. The story about the rich and capable man who became the Hitotsuki in this episode also really drives home to Taro himself. He might not notice but the Hitotsuki’s story in this episode actually had similar insight with Taro, especially early on the series. One last thing, I might miss Haruka when Shida Kohaku would take a rest after recent news about her health. While I like Saruhara the most as my favorite Don Brothers, Haruka is the MVP who gives colour and bright in the story. Up until this point, I was neutral and maybe dislike Sonoza a bit because of his less focus to the story. However, pairing him with Haruka was the best choice Inoue could have taken for the story. There’s some charm where Haruka not only elevates the story to the next level, she could also bring some weak links in the story closer and enhance it even better. If anyone say I will love Haruka and Sonoza as a pairing, I would laugh it at a whim. But now? It’s one of the best dynamics in the show. Better enjoy Haruka and Shida Kohaku’s actions, story and bright in the series while it still lasts.

Good gosh, this episode was relatable...
Haruka's new manga segments featuring some of the cast members as the characters was pretty funny considering a couple of them she fell for, but even using the suits with some additions? Genius! Also, just really fun to see. Sonoza is pretty great for an editor. Funny how he's also the weirdo who can't comprehend emotions and also has good taste. And the villain this week being a guy who just wants something interesting to spark his dull life (I feel like this episode was directed at me, in a way), but allows anything so long as they say something (maybe not?). Also, Jiro "bonding" with Tarou was cute. Next Episode: The Dragon boy gets his mech, and the Dog has his day. |
