I'm watching ahead on the Let's Watch Wednesdays stuff so I can get my articles written up a little early, no be so rushed each week. And having just gotten to episode 26 and been introduced to the new Nexus, I knew I'd seen Ren's actor elsewhere. Of course I have. He's Kamen rider TheBee/Punch Hopper. Holy shit.

It's an anniversary series that IMO does a better job at the anniversary gimmick than Decade or Gokaiger, it has appearances and references to the Showa Ultramen while able to stand on its own as a series with likable characters. |

Alright.
Ultraman properly started in 1966 with the series Ultra Q. This show is sort of like a Showa version of The X-Files. It did not have any giant heroes but did have monsters. The first Ultra Hero is Ultraman, who first appeared in his eponymous series in 1966-1967. This introduced the basic concept of the series -- giant alien hero helps a team of humans fight monsters and aliens. The progression in the Showa era is as such: Ultraman Ultraseven Return of Ultraman Ultraman Ace Ultraman Taro Ultraman Leo Ultraman 80 The series went on a hiatus for most of the 80s, save for a few specials and movies. It was revived in the Hesai era in 1990, with the Aussie co-production Ultraman: Towards The Future (AKA Ultraman Great). This was followed up with an American produced series (which never aired in America) called Ultraman: The Ultimate Hero in 1993 (AKA Ultraman Powered). Tsuburaya brought the show back in house in 1996 with Ultraman Tiga. Ultraman: Towards The Future Ultraman: The Ultimate Hero Ultraman Tiga Ultraman Dyna Ultraman Gaia Ultraman Neos (direct to DVD series) Ultraman Cosmos Ultraman Nexus Ultraman Max Ultraman Meibus Ultraseven X After Ultraseven X, the show switched up a little bit, and started the Ultra Galaxy shows, which lead into the Ultraman Zero movies. Ultra Galaxy Mega Monster Battle Ultra Galaxy Mega Monster Battle: Never Ending Odyssey Mega Monster Battle: Ultra Galaxy The Movie Ultraman Zero: The Revenge of Belial Ultraman Saga After Saga, we got the "mini" show Ultraman Zero Fight, and the upcoming show is Ultraman Ginga. In addition to the shows there have been several movies throughout the years, ranging from re-jiggered episodes in the Showa era, to the relatively large budget Ultraman: The Next theatrical film from 2004. There have also been specials, gaidens some kids shows, remakes, and so forth. Most of the shows follow the same general format as I mentioned above -- the Ultra hero helping out a team of humans who defend the Earth. Within each series there will be different details, conflicts, enemies, and allies. Some shows break the mold. The Ultra Galaxy shows deal with heroes and villains who can summon classic Ultra Monsters to fight for them. Ultraseven X dispatches the Monster Of The Week format frequently to present a dystopian 1984-esque future. The Zero movies and Zero fight take place in the Land Of The Light, and thus focus on the Ultras themselves moreso than humans or Earth. Ultraman and Ultraseven are available on commercial DVD here in the US. Ultraman Tiga was available as well but those DVDs are out of print. You can get most all of the shows Raw, and there are some fansubs out there as well, though not nearly a complete set. You can find some on KRDL.info and more if you search. You can also watch Ultraman and Ultraman: Towards The Future in English for free on Hulu. Hope this helps! |

There were also animated Ultraman titles, Ultraman Jonais, which a co-production between Tsuburaya and Sunrise (Gundam anime) and there is Ultraman USA an attempt by Tsuburaya to import the franchise to the Western market with animation done by Hanna Barbara (yes, that Hanna Barbara)
EDIT: Wanted to add this link, which has a nice visual reference for each of the Ultra Heroes up to Zero, including non-stars like Zoffy, Astra, etc. http://m-78.jp/ultraheroes/

Just watched Max 16, in which three alien cats make all living creatures lose their memories. Definitely one of the funniest half hours of tokustatsu I've ever seen. Kaito forgetting how to transform, Max forgetting how to use the Max Spark, Elly freaking out, the whole DASH Mother catastrophe... this was a really fun episode.

Watched Ultraman Zero: The Revenge of Belial.
And I absolutely loved it! It was great to finally see more of Zero as a character, since his role in Ultra Galaxy Legends was rather small. The other characters were great too, Glenfire and Jean-Bot are polar opposites and played each other very well. Mirror Knight was definitely more quiet than the rest but I liked him too and he had some awesome moments. The human side was good too, I didn't expect Nao to actually be likeable; like Mirror Knight Emerana was rather quiet but I liked her role. Ran was simply Zero's host and nothing else, so nothing much to say there. The plot was simple but effective, a search to find the Shield of Baradhi aka Ultraman Noa, I have no idea how he ended up in an alternate universe though. And I seriously doubt Nexus will explain that. And the music was great too! Loved the opening and ending themes. On the other side I do have a few nitpicks, first of all the narrator, his exposition was completely unnecesary, everytime he says something it's either obvious or another character explains it too, making him redundant. I did like his final line. And Belial didn't feel like such a big threat this time, last time he took on all the Ultras by himself, froze the land of light and had an army made of all the dead monsters. Whereas in this movie neither his army nor his final form were particulary impressive, he simply was in the movie because they needed a villain, which is a shame because he was really cool in Ultra Galaxy Legends. But besides that I loved it, there's a certain charm about the Ultra heroes that the other Toku heroes don't have, like Superman I guess. On the other side the more I like Zero the less I like Seven, I know it's unfair to judge him based on two movies that don't focus on him, but Seven could have avoided most of the problems with Belial if he had been a responsible parent for Zero. |

And the thing with Next/Noa/Nexus etc is that they're universe was originally conceived as a new alternate reboot universe to the original M78 Ultra universe. Nexus, or rather The Next, was meant to be the original Ultraman for a new generation. The basis of a rebooted franchise. But with poor ratings for Nexus, and it's abrupt cancellation Tsuburaya shifted gears to Max and went back to the original universe. Forgetting all about the Nexus-verse until the Revenge of Belial. Hence Noa became the lost Ultra. And being the lost Ultra and all that, that's why Noa never had crossovers with his "predecessors" and he was never really included in the M78 universe. Noa/Nexus, Jean-Bot, Mirror Knight, and Glenfire are from the same universe. Of course outside of Noa the others have returned to M78 with Zero.

It really is a great film. It's what got ,e into the Ultra franchise. Have you seen the Zero/Darklops side stories that go between Revenge and Galaxy? Also pretty good stuff. I'll agree with you on the characters too. Ultimate Force Zero is a solid roster, Glenfire is the Momotaros of Ultraman so of course I love him, and Jean-Bot is a fantastic robo design. Great voice overs all around too.

I was aware that Noa was from another universe, the thing that had me confused is why the heck is he a statue? What could have possibly happened in Nexus that got Noa stuck on a completely different planet from Earth without his powers? |

Yeah I watched the Side-Story. It was nice, Darklops Zero was a big threat.

It's the same universe the Nexus TV show took place in if that's what you mean. But if you mean how he wound up in the ruins of Mirror Knights world then IDK. I'm about 3 episodes away from the finale so I don't know how/why or even if an explanation could be given. But literally anything could have happened in the proceeding years after the finale of Nexus.
*Edit* --Killer the Beatstar-- Another solid entry in the Ultraman Zero series, it has me more pumped for Saga than Darklops ever did for Zero. Nice battles a good story, more Rei and Gomora (I love that design) and Jean-Killer was a good foe. Loved the explanation they gave for Jean-Nine's name.
