I'd argue that a fraction of any decrease in quality of new installments might even be a side effect of resources (people, assets, time, etc.) being put in to nostalgia. I don't think nostalgia is inherently bad, as a harmless remaster like VIII got in 2019 was an already finished game. I think for nostalgia, they should go small and simple, not big and extravagant.
I'm actually hoping that revisiting the older games gives a renewed sense of inspiration, resulting in a better end product. But I still have little faith in them these days.

Nostalgia is good up to a point but you can't hold on to the past forever. That's the mistake Square - Enix is making with these remake games. Final Fantasy needs to move forward. Not look back. I'm mainly getting caught up on the series right now. I can play up to Final Fantasy XIII.
Games yet to play Final Fantasy IV Final Fantasy VII Currently Playing Final Fantasy IX Final Fantasy XII Final Fantasy XIII Need To Finish Final Fantasy III (NES) - Mobile Final Fantasy V Final Fantasy X (PS2)

I definitely see where you're coming from, and can't fault you for seeing it that way, but I'm not sure how much it really applies here. 13 and 15 both came out before Square went in guns blazing with nostalgia. In fact, during the period between those two games, fans had been clamoring for a remake of some of the older games, especially 7. Square was dead-set against it, because they wanted to remain relevant and not get stuck in nostalgia. I think it's only been since the success of the 7 remake that they started looking backwards more.
I'm actually hoping that revisiting the older games gives a renewed sense of inspiration, resulting in a better end product. But I still have little faith in them these days. If all this work on spin-offs and remakes does eventually spur some kind of inspiration for new original content like you suggest, maybe it'll be worth it.

I finished Final Fantasy thanks to a PS1 re release and Final Fantasy II. (New to the USA).
Some later entries are easier. Final Fantasy X wasn't too hard surprisingly. I'm nearly finished. Also Final Fantasy XII isn't too much of a challenge. (Need to be strong enough.) Final Fantasy XIII is a rough game. Starting with Final Fantasy XII the games have been looking more realistic lately even with the limitations of the PS 2. In Final Fantasy XII when you're in a building you actually look like you're in a building. Even the shrines are like that. The mine levels were trippy for this reason. It was a bit disorienting. I have Final Fantasy V on Mobile so now I can catch up 3 games after Final Fantasy II NES.

XII is probably my favorite mainline Final Fantasy titles (I'm not counting XIV on account that I'm only 2/5ths into the story, so I don't have the full picture there, but I do really love XIV), gameplay, probably not as much.
XIII, while I did like it, I'd like to play XIII-2 and Lighting Returns to make a full judgement. X was good, I have a lot of fun with turn-based games, really should finish X-2, since I made a mistake on my first run, so I'd like to do it properly. VII Remake, probably my favorite gameplay, of course, I also like XV's from what I've played. Also, thanks Wentwood for sharing the specs, since I'll probably switch to Playstation since my computer probably can't take it, even if I remove XIV. That and I'd like to reinstall VIII, I, or any of the others I picked up on sale (especially VI and IX). I also have a PS1 with a collection of old games, including the original Final Fantasy VII, which I'm planning on playing. |

In a few days I may be able to play Final Fantasy X- 2 and XIII - 2 Plus FF XIII Lightning Returns on PS 3 but I need to catch up the main line first. By moving Metal Gear Solid V Part 1 Ground Zeros and Part 2 Phantom Pain onto PS3 that opens up PS 4 for Final Fantasy XV. The base game alone will make a decent dent in things. After FF XV I may not get any further games.
This may seem like a throw away for one game. Final Fantasy XV was the first game I bought for PS 4 and I'm not losing that spot. I say this on account of having to add the expansion stuff for Royal Edition. In regards to the Pixel Remaster set I have to admit that the music on this is cool but it feels like going backwards to me with the 8 bit NES look. Saw some footage of this on You Tube just now. 3 has a nice rock tweek to the monster battle fights. That makes it feel right which they could have done that for the DS version of the game. Mobile hit it right with Final Fantasy IV which I presently play.

XIII LR is one you might need a guide for, since you're going to be watching the clock a lot. There are a few limited time quests that are easy to miss. But otherwise, the time limit is generous enough, especially if you spam chronostasis. There's a lot of customization options for the Schema system as well.

I need to get Final Fantasy X - 2 , XIII - 2 and XIII Lightning Returns.
After I add those 3 to my library I may start up X - 2 soon since I'm almost finished with Final Fantasy X. Not sure if I would need to get the HD Remaster set for Play Station 3. As for Final Fantasy XII I need to get my accessories liscences finished up first.
